Project Spanish Reading Assessment Activity - Smash Doodles with Rubric

By Cheryl Bennett

Smash Doodles are a great way to assess Spanish reading while encouraging creativity. I love using this at the end of the year to demonstrate that a student can read independently and show what they know. Plus, it's easy to grade!

The set up for these Smash Doodles (along with the rubric) make it easy to grade.

Included:

1. Instructions

2. Sample sentence starters (including a couple that would be great for subjunctive practice)

3. Sample image

4. Smash Doodle Sheet that students fill out to make sure they meet all the criteria.

5. A second Smash Doodle Sheet that allows for more creativity

6. Easy to use rubric.

7. Criteria that pushes students to think critically and make use of best practices in reading comprehension.

So, what is it?

A Smash Doodle is a way to show what students have learned from the chapter or reading assigned. It involves creativity, color, the most important vocabulary, students' thoughts and questions.

Who is it for?

This assignment works for any level of Spanish students. Any reading assignment can work with Smash Doodles. It can be used with novels meant for early language acquirers, short stories, poetry, etc. This assignment is automatically differentiated as students will choose the vocabulary that they need and not simply a list dictated by the teacher.

What does the assignment include?

This particular Smash Doodle assignment includes:

  1. The title and chapter of the book
  2. 5 vocabulary words in Spanish with the English translation and a hand-drawn picture in color.
  3. 3 thoughts about the chapter in Spanish
  4. 3 quotes from the book, in Spanish
  5. 3 questions in Spanish . It could be things you are curious about or questions for characters
  6. A main image that represents the chapter.

Print at 80% and include in your interactive journals.

AP Spanish Persuasive Paragraph Assessment with Study Guide and Rubric

By Specialty Spanish

AP Spanish® teachers- here is a GREAT way to assess both content knowledge and either writing or speaking skill! This assessment can be digital or printable, formative or summative! Included in this resource is a student study guide explaining what their task is and some helpful do's and don'ts to writing persuasively!

Instead of an entire essay, students will write a concise paragraph defending a position related to a topic investigated in class. In order to do well, students must reference the sources they read, listened to, viewed and discussed in class. This task asks a question about climate change, but simply change out the question to make this assessment fit with any unit or context!

Who can use this product?

  • Advanced Spanish students (Year 4, 5 AP®)

How can I use this product?

  • Assign this assessment via Google Classroom (or other digital learning platform) or print this out to use it in paper form

  • Change out the question to use and re-use this assessment
  • Grade this as a formal or informal assessment (formative or summative)
  • Use this as a homework assignment or a class activity
  • Use this as a lead-in to writing an entire argumentative essay
  • Assess content knowledge as well ask language proficiency

What's included in this product?

  • a page of Teacher Notes with helpful hints about using this resource
  • a study guide for students including the do's and don'ts of writing persuasively
  • an assessment question related to climate change (easily changed or edited to fit your unit or context)

Spanish Verb Tenses Project for Review

By Specialty Spanish

This Spanish Verb Tenses Project is perfect to review all the tenses students have learned! Spanish students will write sentences in the present, past and future related to themes that are familiar to them. The rubric will provide fast and specific feedback so students can fix any mistakes! Students can complete this verb tense project individually or in groups. Teachers may assign this as one big project or in smaller parts.

Though teachers can customize (and either add or reduce these tenses), students will create 5 slides, each with 6 sentences. The 6 sentences represent the 6 tenses students have learned so far (present, present progressive, preterite, imperfect, imperfect progressive and future). Students choose a theme for each slide, such as travel, summer, food, etc. They write sentences in each tense to practice 1) how to form each tense, 2) connecting the name of the tense with what it looks like and 3) what each verb tense means in English. Students can customize the design of each slide as well! Students can keep their completed project for future reference as they continue their language learning.

The rubric is designed for teachers to tell students which slide and which tenses on each slide are correct or have an error to make feedback fast and specific!

Who can use this product:

  • Students at the Novice High proficiency level and up
  • Students at the end of Year 1 and up

How to use this product:

  • Use this activity individually or as group or partner work

Spanish Authentic Listening Activity Winter Invierno in Chile

By Specialty Spanish

Authentic listening activities for Spanish class can be so hard to find!  We want our students to practice their listening skills but we don’t want to spend an hour searching for a good video!  This YouTube video is about winter in Chile.  A young person takes us around his city and explains what winter is like there.  To check comprehension, students will answer questions as they watch. Students will make comparisons and discover similarities and differences between their own experience and the speaker’s experience in Chile.   An answer key is also included!

Are your students interested in winter-themed activities?  Maybe this bundle is right for you!  It includes group writing challenges, speaking or writing task cards and this listening activity-all with a winter theme!

Spanish Winter-Themed Activities Bundle

Who can use this product?

  • Spanish students in Year 3 and up

How can I use this product?

  • Play the video for the class on a projector or Smartboard
  • Assign the video via Google Classroom or other learning platform
  • Assign the comprehension questions by printing or posting to a learning platform
  • Use this as a class activity, homework or assessment!

What’s included in this product?

  • A link to a YouTube video about winter in Chile.  The speaker is a young person to whom our high school students can relate (9 minutes)
  • A print or post comprehension activity
  • Questions in the comprehension activity are in English.  I did this on purpose so that students cannot simply copy what they hear (and potentially not understand what it means)
  • Questions ask for details about what the speaker said and also ask student to compare and contrast their own experiences with those of the speaker
  • Answer key included!

El primero es un mural de acontecimientos actuales.

El segundo es una publicación mockup de Instagram. Esta al igual que el muralismo tiende ser una de las actividades favoritas de los estudiantes ya que razona con ellos.

Como un bono incluye una actividad que ayuda a generar un bosquejo para un podcast.

Las actividades se pueden completar rápidamente y no tienen pierde.

Se pueden hacer en los niveles de español 2 a AP español.

It includes two projects that are fast and fun. The first one is a current events mural. It includes the rubric, examples, and a guide. The second one is an Instagram mockup post. This, like the mural project, tends to be one of the students' favorite activities because it resonates with them. As a bonus, it includes an activity that helps generate a podcast outline. These activities can be completed quickly and are foolproof. They can be done at Spanish levels 2 through AP Spanish.

I believe in Game Based Learning and Project Based Learning in the classroom.
