Smash Doodles are a great way to assess Spanish reading while encouraging creativity. I love using this at the end of the year to demonstrate that a student can read independently and show what they know. Plus, it's easy to grade!

The set up for these Smash Doodles (along with the rubric) make it easy to grade.

So, what is it?

A Smash Doodle is a way to show what students have learned from the chapter or reading assigned. It involves creativity, color, the most important vocabulary, students' thoughts and questions.

Who is it for?

This assignment works for any level of Spanish students. Any reading assignment can work with Smash Doodles. It can be used with novels meant for early language acquirers, short stories, poetry, etc. This assignment is automatically differentiated as students will choose the vocabulary that they need and not simply a list dictated by the teacher.

What does the assignment include?

This particular Smash Doodle assignment includes:

1. The title and chapter of the book
2. 5 vocabulary words in Spanish with the English translation and a hand-drawn picture in color.
3. 3 thoughts about the chapter in Spanish
4. 3 quotes from the book, in Spanish
5. 3 questions in Spanish . It could be things you are curious about or questions for characters
6. A main image that represents the chapter.

Print at 80% and include in your interactive journals.

Do your Spanish students need some help with interpersonal speaking?  Are they struggling to have conversations in Spanish?  Let’s give them some guided support with these partner conversations about accidents and injuries!  Both students will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions as part of a conversation, but with a lot of scaffolding to build confidence.

There are 4 guided conversations, so both students will have a chance to ask and answer questions in a conversational way.  

These conversations focus on accidents and injuries in the past time frame (preterite and imperfect).

• Spanish students in year 2 and up

• Students will work in partners to participate in a guided conversation
• Students will trade roles so both can practice asking questions and answering questions

Need a FUN way for Spanish students to write about New Years? Use this Spanish writing group activity to help your students achieve the next level of ACTFL proficiency. Students will use the present tense and the preterite and imperfect tense to invent a mascot for New Year's! This activity is perfect for both distance learning and in-person learning!

This resource provides an interesting writing topic: inventing a mascot to represent the New Year's Holiday, and a way for students to collaborate in order to produce a high quality writing piece.  These instructions ask students to use the present, imperfect and preterite tenses, but you can customize this for your class. Are you using Extempore to manage your Spanish students' speaking tasks? These 5 speaking activities focus on the future tense with the theme what life events will happen in the future. Using a Google Doc, this resource contains 5 links to ready-to-use Extempore speaking activities! Under each link in the Google Doc, there is a description of what each Extempore speaking task is like. (For example, some have picture prompts, some focus on present and future, and others ask students to tell a a story using connected sentences).

These family vocabulary wheel games are such a fun game to practice the family members in Spanish. The wheels are easy to set up and keep students engaged in learning. They can be used with the whole class, small groups, centers or partners.
