*******************************

Anticipation Guides are excellent tools that can be used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic and/or to share ideas about key concepts. Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!! This Anticipation Guide and Self-Assessment focuses on Body Language | Nonverbal Communication | Social Cues.

You can use an Anticipation Guide:

✅ Before | After introducing new material to tap into prior knowledge.

✅ Before | After watching a film clip to gauge a reaction.

✅ Before | After reading a short text to begin a discussion.

✅ Before | After discussing a topic.

*******************************

ANTICIPATION GUIDES

There is ONE Anticipation Guide that comes in two different variations:

▶️ Variation #1:

⭐ *Part 1: *The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.

⭐ *Part 2: *The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.

**▶️ Variation #2: **This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." Students are instructed to read each statement and mark either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE." They are then encouraged to elaborate on their thoughts or ideas regarding each statement in the designated "COMMENTS" column.

******************************

SELF-ASSESSMENT

This resource includes a single Body Language Self-Assessment. Students will use the body language - related statements to reflect on their understanding of nonverbal communication, evaluate their ability to interpret and respect others’ cues, and identify areas where they can improve. They will score the statements using the following scale: 2 for “Regularly,” 1 for “Occasionally,” and 0 for “Never.” They will use this self-assessment as a tool to help them identify areas for growth and improvement in their ability to read, interpret, and use body language effectively in everyday interactions.

This assessment also serves as a valuable tool for initiating conversations about the importance of nonverbal communication in building positive relationships, fostering empathy, and enhancing overall social skills. It encourages students to recognize how body language can influence perceptions, convey emotions, and support effective communication in both personal and professional settings.

Career Card Game: "What Career" Interactive Activity

By Jeni Donath

Give your students the opportunity to explore many different careers in a fun and interactive way! This "What Career" card game is played similar to the card game "Apples to Apples" and my students LOVED it! It lead to a lot of conversation, sharing of likes and dislikes, and questioning of what specific careers were - it was so refreshing to listen to them talk non-stop about careers during these class periods! Included in the download is everything you need to play the game, including instructions and step by step guide!

Impact of Your Words - Middle + High School SEL Activity and Interactive Lesson

By Jeni Donath

Creating a positive environment for students is a top priority, but it can be difficult when individuals lack an awareness of the impact of their words towards others, especially when it does not affect them in the same way. This activity brings awareness and a better understanding, while also increasing empathy and care toward others. I also like to remind students that we cannot control what other people chose to say and do, though we can take time to educate and create awareness, especially when something they are saying or doing is impacting us. This lesson can be customized to fit whatever statements would be most beneficial in recognizing within your school.

Kindness Activity + the Impact of our Words - SEL Classroom Lesson

By Jeni Donath

This Kindness Activity brings a whole new perspective on the impact of our words and how they can get carried throughout the day. For this activity, you will be provided with the Google Slide digital download which includes key notes, instructions for you and your class, visuals, reflective points, and a "ready to use" download. You will also need: heavy books, balloons (or feathers, crumpled paper, or other 'light' items), post-it notes, and a bucket or other container to hold the post-it notes. This lesson is both interactive and impactful - leading to reflection and discussion for all. It is important to note that some students may use this activity as a way to identify harsh, heavy, or negative comments that may be occurring within the school building and the counselor, support staff, or teacher should be prepared to address this with the class, while acknowledgement that some comments brought up may be better addressed in a more private setting. This lesson has been a huge environment changer for my middle school students!
