Women during the Industrial Revolution: Teaching Bundle * PPT * DBQs * Worksheet

By Christa Nonnemaker

This Teaching Bundle contains the following items:
* PowerPoint Presentation
* Reading Assignment and Worksheet
* Analyzing Primary Sources

PowerPoint Presentation

This 15-slide PowerPoint presentation covers the women during the Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age. It is an ideal lesson for the post-Civil War period or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.

Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight women’s changing roles due to industrialization. It highlights the different experiences based on social classes as well as work experiences and early organizational efforts.

The PowerPoint slides are available both as PPT and PDF. Check the Bonus section for the additional file.

There is also an Easel Assessment. For Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is a valuable digital tool.

Reading Assignment and Worksheet

This three-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women between 1865 and 1910 as the United States faced dramatic changes due to the Industrial Revolution. Students will learn about the growing divisions between social classes as well as early efforts to combat some of the issues facing the nation.
Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.
Reading Assignment - 2 pages
Worksheet - 1 page

The worksheet is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.

Primary Source Analysis and DBQs

This 20 page Primary Source Analysis activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into women’s experiences and contributions during the Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age. In addition, there are Document-Based Questions (DBQs) for students to complete.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources include speeches, essays, a declaration and cartoons. Each page of primary sources includes questions. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and APUSH students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers, college students or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student time will vary.

There is also an Easel Activity which allows students to answer the questions at the end of each primary source online. For homework purposes, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is an especially valuable digital option.

This is part of the Women in American History Series which includes PowerPoint lessons as well as Reading Assignments and Worksheets, Primary Source Analysis and DBQs and Activities for other eras.

If you like World War II historical fiction, I have written a book called Hearts of War about a Nisei soldier who served in the Military Intelligence Service and a woman who served in the Women Army Corps. In writing this book, I wanted to bring an unknown aspect of history to light. Available on Amazon or Kindle and I appreciate any reviews!

Ancient Egypt Scavenger Hunt (No Prep!)

By Miss Yous Clues and Resources

Introduce your students to the thrilling no prep Ancient Egyptian Scavenger Hunt! This engaging and interactive activity puts students in the shoes of a detective trying to find a long lost burial site of an unknown pharaoh who was said to have more riches than even King Tutankhamun.

Each student, or group of students, will receive 10 reading task cards related to Ancient Egypt, how the Egyptians modified their environment, how they used their local resources, the role of artifacts and archaeological features. The task is not only to read the cards but to solve 10 questions—the catch is that the answer to each question is found on a different card, encouraging students to read all the information thoroughly.

How It Works:

  • Students will need to determine the code word for each card by answering the fill-in-the-blank questions.
  • Once all the code words have been found, students must unscramble the letters from each code word to discover the final mystery word.
  • In addition, they will collect clues to uncover a 4-digit code, which will help them successfully complete their journey.

Failing to unscramble the mystery word or crack the 4-digit code will result in the tomb remaining sealed forever, and the expedition will be lost to the sands of time. However, completing the mission means students will have made one of the greatest discoveries in history, uncovering the forgotten pharaoh’s solid gold burial site, filled with unimaginable riches, artifacts, and secrets of Ancient Egypt!

What Makes This Activity Perfect for Your Classroom:

  • Engaging and Educational: Your students will be excited to play the role of an explorer while learning about Ancient Egypt and how the Egyptians used/modified their environment.
  • Critical Thinking Skills: By having to cross-reference information from multiple task cards, students practice comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • No-Prep Needed: Simply print the task cards and hand them out to your students! It’s ready to go with minimal prep.
  • Flexible Usage: This scavenger hunt can be used independently, as a group activity, or even as a fast-finisher task. It works perfectly as a history lesson, or as a fun, educational activity!

Ideal for Different Learning Styles

Whether done individually or in groups, this scavenger hunt provides the perfect opportunity for students to collaborate and share ideas as they solve the puzzles. If students are working independently, it gives them a chance to practice self-paced learning while still engaging with the history of Ancient Egypt.

Perfect for History Lessons or Fun Themed Activities This activity fits seamlessly into your classroom’s history curriculum. It’s a perfect way to introduce and reinforce learning about Ancient Egypt.

This Ancient Egypt Scavenger Hunt is not only a fun, no-prep classroom activity, but it also ensures that students gain a deeper understanding of history while developing important reading and comprehension skills. Bring the excitement of the search for the Ancient Egyptian burial site into your classroom with this adventure-packed scavenger hunt.

The Great Gatsby Escape Room

By Language Arts Excellence

Get ready to have the most fun you'll have teaching with a lesson that your students will be talking about for years to come with F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby ESCAPE ROOM!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

Instead of entering your classroom, your students have shown up to one of the extravagant parties at the Gatsby mansion. They are surrounded by people dancing, drinking, and acting as if they have not a care in the world. But then they notice a man that looks as if he does not fit in with the crowd. He dons overalls and his face is covered in grease…and he grips a revolver tightly with his right hand. Now your students must locate Gatsby within his mansion before this mechanic on a mission gets to him! The only way to escape is by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way.

  • Gatsby F.I.T.B.: In the first task, students must complete fill-in-the-blank sentences using vocabulary words from the novel. The vocabulary cards, once assembled correctly, will reveal the first code.
  • Guess Who: In the second task, students must match each character from The Great Gatsby with one of their notable quotes from the novel by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their second code word.
  • Plot it Out: In the third task, students must order the major plot points of The Great Gatsby on Freytag's Pyramid. When ordered correctly, letters in the shaded boxes on the chart form their third code.
  • Criss-Cross: In the fourth task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, and quotes from the novel. Circled letters within the crossword, once unscrambled, reveal their fourth code.
  • Missing Word: In the final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle that forms a notable quote from the novel with one missing word. Once the puzzle is assembled and students figure out the missing word, they may escape the room and save Gatsby!

Product Includes:

- Escape Room Basics

- Detailed Day-Of Instructions

- Escape Room Print & Classroom Preparation Checklist

- Student Teams Chart

- Materials for 5 Tasks: task signs to be folded upright, task instructions (2 per page for easy printing), and necessary information to be kept at stations

- Student Answer Sheet

- Teacher Answer Keys

- Escape Room Reflection for homework or in-class writing activity

- Theme Reflection for homework assignment or in-class writing activity

This escape room is an ideal way to end your unit on The Great Gatsby and a great way to review for the final test.
