"Let's Pause" is a comprehensive research based impulse control curriculum designed specifically for high school students aged 14-18.

1.Session 1: Welcome & Introduction to the Group In this session, students are introduced to the purpose of the group, setting the stage for a journey of self-discovery and growth. Expectations for the sessions ahead are discussed, creating a sense of belonging.

2.Session 2: What is Impulse Control? Students delve into the concept of impulse control, understanding why it's important and how it can positively impact their lives. This session lays the groundwork for the entire program.

3.Session 3: Our Remote Control - Pause/Think/Act Through interactive activities, participants learn the power of pausing before reacting impulsively. They explore the metaphor of a remote control for self-control and practice the essential skills of pausing, thinking, and acting mindfully.

4.Session 4: Coping Skills and Strategies Students are introduced to a toolkit of coping skills and strategies that empower them to navigate moments of impulsivity. These practical techniques equip participants to better handle challenging situations.

5.Session 5: Perspective Taking This session helps students develop empathy and perspective-taking abilities. Through activities and discussions, they learn to see situations from different viewpoints, enhancing their interpersonal skills.

6.Session 6: Choices and Consequences Participants explore the connection between choices and consequences, discovering that every action has an outcome. They gain insight into how making thoughtful choices can lead to positive results.

7.Session 7: Conflict Resolution In this interactive session, students learn constructive ways to resolve conflicts and disagreements. They practice communication skills that promote peaceful resolutions.

8.Session 8: Problem Solving Effective problem-solving techniques are introduced, empowering participants to address impulse-provoking issues in a constructive manner. The session emphasizes the importance of finding solutions to problems.

9.Session 9: In and Out of Your Control Students explore the concept of control and responsibility in impulse control. They gain clarity on what they can control versus what is beyond their control, helping them make informed decisions.

10.Session 10: Termination and Review In the final session, students reflect on their journey through the "Let's Pause" curriculum. They review key concepts and skills acquired, celebrating their growth and setting goals for continued impulse control success.

INTRODUCTION

Show the 5 Major Religions YouTube video or a video of your choice to introduce Judaism, Islam, and Christianity—the three monotheistic religions.

COOPERATIVE LEARNING READING ACIVITY

Students will work in group to complete Venn diagram or comparison chart (students' choice) as they read "What You Need To Know About World Religions" packet on Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

REVIEW GAME:

Review Activity—Bingo Trading Cards

Provide each team with a Bingo Card. Each team will work together to create nine open-ended questions for their Bingo Cards related to the history, beliefs, and traditions of each of the religions being studied—Judaism, Islam and Christianity—but will leave the answer for each question blank. Students will have 10 minutes to work in their teams to develop and insert their open-ended questions.

Once students have finished developing and inserting all 9 questions (one per box), the game will begin. This is not a typical Bingo game. It is actually not Bingo at all. Students trade cards and roll dice to determine which question his/her team will attempt to answer. Once answered, they trade cards again and so on. Very fun and effective review game!

A FUN WAY TO STUDY 20TH-CENTURY PEOPLE AND EVENTS!

Globalization and Interdependence describes the relationships of mutual dependence between all elements and life forms (including humans) within and across cultures, environments, and social systems. Today, more than ever before, globalization and interdependence are part of our everyday local lives. We are linked to others on every continent even if we don't realize it. A photo gallery walk is a fun and engaging way to get your student actively involved in the learning process. Students will work together in teams or cooperative groups and will travel through 12 picture galleries learning about the different world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism among other religions. This is a great activity for an introductory lesson or for a reinforcement activity!

Covers the traditions and practices of the world’s most influential religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islamism, Taoism, Animism, Shintoism, Monotheism, Polytheism & non-religions: Atheism, Agnosticism. The lesson teaches the difference between polytheistic and monotheistic religions.

OBJECTIVE:

• The learner will become familiar with world religions’ cultural hearth, beliefs, and practices.
• The learner will recognize and understand key terms of each world religion.
• The learner will examine the beliefs, traditions, and customs of the major religions of the world.
• The learner will determine the similarities and differences between each world religion.

MATERIALS:

• Copies of each gallery, laminated for future use and durability. (Place these around the room or in the hall if more room is needed)
• Use adhesive to adhere all 12 gallery sheets to the wall, spread out as if you were in a gallery.
• Post-it notes for each group
• A clipboard or a piece of paper for each group to place their sticky notes on as they move around the room.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
World religions can be a sensitive topic. When presenting the religions and discussing them do not show any bias’ toward one religion. Remain neutral so as not to lean to accept one religion over the other. This is a factual lesson that helps students understand culture throughout the world as many cultural practices are relative to a specific religion within the region. You may have some parents who prefer their child to not be taught this within the classroom setting. If your district has a policy where parents can request their child not attend class during a sensitive topic, then send out a letter to all parents communicating that your class is starting a unit on world religions and have them sign it to opt-out or opt-in. Follow your district’s guidelines.

There are may political, economic, and social factors that reshape our world and our maps. IMPORTANT: Give students the option to choose not to participate in this lesson if they are anyway connected to the event. Let them know in advance earlier in the week prior to the day of the lesson and allow them to come to you in confidentiality if they wish not to participate. Make another arrangement for that student for the one class period.

This is a factual lesson and does not ask students to imagine or place themselves in others' shoes, yet if a child had a family member or experienced the event his/herself, you may not want to subject them to ANY lesson on this topic. This lesson gives a timeline of events and facts about the event.

ALSO NOTE: The closing activity incorporates a song by the Beastie Boys: "Listen, All You New Yorkers" which was written after 9/11 as a Love Letter to New York. (Look it up on Youtube) Depending on your classroom/school culture, you may or may not choose to use this. This is not mandatory for the lesson, but song and music is a good way to engage students. In saying this, the lyrics included in the lesson have been rewritten to take out questionable wording/content. i.e. LSD, Porno, Hell. These words have been replaced with other words. However, the words cannot be taken out of the Youtube video or song. The lyrics can be used without the video or song, but will not be as effective. IMPORTANT: YOU WILL WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG PRIOR TO PURCHASE as this song may not be appropriate for all students/classes/schools. o The learner will understand the impact of this event on the life of an individual through discussion.

o Index cards for questions.

o The learner will listen or watch and then examine the lyrics to the song: A letter to New York: Listen, All You New Yorkers by the Beastie Boys, 2004.

MATERIALS:

o Student group reading assignment included.

o Copy of Lyrics to Listen, All You New Yorkers (included) Rewritten into a cleaner version to replace words like: hell, LSD, Porno, etc.

o Suggested YouTube video for viewing (or) YouTube or Spotify audio version.

Students will then move into cooperative groups and will rotate stations where they will read and complete 6 different task cards. They will begin with a quick overview of American migration and move to migration trends and policies and end with the effects of immigration on the country of origin as well as the receiving country.
