Advanced French Translation Challenge #12 - Video + PowerPoint

My series of Advanced French Translation Challenges is for intermediate through advanced level learners. Practically every grammar topic in my complete series which is available as a bundle. Note that I made these videos for my students, so I may make references to lessons that your students may not have learned.

The video is 12 minutes long, giving time for you or students to put the video on pause and to work on translations before going over them. I provide LOTS of grammar explanations. The video includes two substantial translations, English to French. You may choose to work on only one per session. I've included a PowerPoint version if you would rather not use the video and work through the translations with your students on your own.

Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.

Part One

-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.

-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade

Part Two

-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.

-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students

Part Three

-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories

-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.

This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!

Fantastic PowerPoint presentation to teach, learn and practice about fractions.

- What is a fraction?

-Structure of a fraction (numerator and denominator)

- Vocabulary (whole, half, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth)

Eight animated slides explain each of these words.

-2 quiz games to practice:

- How much pizza have I eaten so far?

- How much pizza is left?

Both sets of questions are shown in random order each time so that the children do not know the answer beforehand.

Instructions:

When you first open the document, you will be prompted to enable content that is blocked for security reasons. That content is nothing more than the Visual Basic code for the next slide button to achieve random order in both games. Please accept it in order to get the slides of the games in random order.

I recommend that you watch the preview video to know how it works and where to click to activate each of the animations but it is really intuitive and easy to use. Your students will love this resource and they will learn by playing.

It comes with an Easel assessment of 19 questions.

A total of thirteen 2D shapes in their corresponding slides, where we can see how many sides, angles, and vertices (lados, ángulos y vértices) each one of them has dynamically and attractively through various animations. If you click on the number of sides shown in the chart for each of the shapes, an animation clearly shows which sides are. If you click on the number of angles or the number of vertices, they will also be clearly shown to the student using individual animations.

Apart from the shape drawn as an example, a real example of that shape and another example of that shape in the art world are shown. To see this last example larger, click on it.

Geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class are a great transition to start class and get students mentally ready.

Engage your students with this colorful, fun, ready-to-use geography trivia bell ringer PowerPoint. Get your students' geography juices flowing as they try to determine the correct answer to each geography trivia question. This set has 31 days to cover the first 6 weeks with answers slides to present to your students.

How it works: As your students enter the class, have the slide with the question on for them to guess/research the answer. After the bell rings, reveal the answer on the following slide and see who answered it correctly. Slide 2 will have the question, slide 3 will have the answer, slide 4 will have a question, slide 5 will have the answer, and so on. (A total of 62 slides with questions & answers)

My series of Advanced French Translation Challenges is for intermediate through advanced level learners. Practically every grammar topic in my complete series which is available as a bundle. Note that I made these videos for my students, so I may make references to lessons that your students may not have learned.

The video is 9 minutes long, giving time for you or students to put the video on pause and to work on translations before going over them. I provide LOTS of grammar explanations. The video includes two substantial translations, English to French. You may choose to work on only one per session. I've included a PowerPoint version if you would rather not use the video and work through the translations with your students on your own.

Grammar highlighted in this resource:

• depuis + present

The grammar topics are quite varied, because this is what happens in real French conversations. I frequently do translation work with my students, and they really appreciate the variety of material that is covered.

Every sentence includes the grammar that your advanced students have been working so hard to master. When translating, it's interesting to compare sentence structure. This is an opportunity to observe sentences that students would really say, and to figure out how to do that in French.

Fantastic resource in PowerPoint that will be very useful when explaining the properties of each of the following 2D shapes:

- Oval

A total of thirteen 2D shapes in their corresponding slides, where we can see how many sides, angles, and vertices each one of them has dynamically and attractively through various animations. If you click on the number of sides shown in the chart for each of the shapes, an animation clearly shows which sides are. If you click on the number of angles or the number of vertices, they will also be clearly shown to the student using individual animations.

Apart from the shape drawn as an example, a real example of that shape and another example of that shape in the art world are shown. To see this last example larger, click on it.

Summary:

Claude McKay, born Festus Claudius McKay in Sunny Ville, Jamaica in 1889, was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, a prominent literary movement of the 1920s. His work ranged from vernacular verse celebrating peasant life in Jamaica to poems that protested racial and economic inequities. His philosophically ambitious fiction, including tales of Black life in both Jamaica and America, addresses instinctual/intellectual duality, which McKay found central to the Black individual’s efforts to cope in a racist society.

This 9th - 12th grade canonized set of poems allows students to understand society, the need to reflect, and where they fit into society.
