5th Grade Algebra Review Game - Game Show Style

By The M-Intercept

Students will love this Jeopardy-like review game to review all 5th Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking standards. Questions focus on solving expressions, writing expressions, equivalent expressions, analyzing patterns, mixed review, and key vocabulary words. Points range from 100 - 500, which reflect the increase in difficulty throughout each category.

**FULLY EDITABLE** While the game is complete, it is also editable in PowerPoint, making it easy to add questions or change the level of difficulty based on your students' needs.

The game includes 30 high quality questions - 6 categories with 5 questions each ranging in
difficulty from basic review (100) to challenging (500)

Solve Expressions: these questions require students to solve equations using the order of operations. All expressions are straightforward whole numbers, except the 500 point question, which has fractions.

Write Expressions: this category asks students to write expressions from phrases such as "nine more than six" and then increases in difficulty to writing an expression to match a real-world problem.

Equivalent Expressions: students are asked about whether or not expressions are equivalent based on the order of operations, use of parentheses and different ways to display division symbols.

Analyze Patterns: these questions involve continuing a pattern such as "add 8" and continue on to questions matching real-world situations. Some questions require reading and/or using a table or the coordinate plane.

Mixed Review: students are asked computation problems to review adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, as well as questions involving place value.

Vocabulary: this section asks about parentheses, expressions, evaluating, x and y coordinates, and corresponding terms.

Middle School Math: Solving One Step Equations with Rational Numbers

By Geography & Math Made Easy

LESSON: ONE_STEP EQUATIONS PUZZLE GAME

GRADE LEVEL: MIDDLE SCHOOL

TIME FRAME: 1 HOUR

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will work to solve one-step equations with rational numbers.

o The learner will solve equations that include decimals fractions, to solve for x.

MATERIALS:

o Scissors

o Zip lock bags

o Construction paper and glue

o Optional: lamination for storage and reuse. If you choose this, construction paper and glue will not be needed, as they will not glue the pieces to construction paper.

o Print out of puzzle for the instructor as an answer sheet.

PREPARATION:

Students will be working in pairs to complete the equations puzzle, which requires students to solve one-step equations with rational number. Place students in teams of two. Duplicate enough copies for each team to have one puzzle. Cut out the puzzle pieces and place them into a Ziplock bag.

Optional: You may laminate the puzzle pieces for reuse if you choose to keep the pieces to use one year to the next. However, you will not need construction paper and glue if lamination is chosen.

INTRODUCTION: (20 minutes)

Ask students what constitutes an equation.

Answer: An equation says that two things are equal, and may contain two or more

variables.

Ask students what constitute a rational number.

Answer: A number that you can put into fraction such a decimal, fraction, percent or

whole number.

Review how to work through a one-step equation using the following equations:

• 5x=80 Answer (16)

• x+-20=17 Answer: (37)

• x-(-10)=-10 Answer: (-20)

• x-4 1/3=2 2/3 Answer: (7)

HELPFUL VIDEO: (10 minutes)

Helpful Youtube video links included.

TEAM ACTIVITY: (30 minutes)

Provide each team with a puzzle in a Ziplock bag. Provide students 15-30 minutes to solve the equations and place the puzzle together. You may even encourage a competition to see which groups can complete the puzzle first providing prizes to first place, second place, and third place. Once they have the puzzle completed, have them glue it to a piece of construction paper if you have not chosen to laminate the game pieces for reuse.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (20 minutes)

Using an overhead projector or smart board projector that will display the puzzle pieces, work with the class to solve the puzzle. Students will check their answers.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY/HOMEWORK

Give students a blank chart and allow them to create a puzzle for that they can give to another group/student to complete. Make sure the student keeps a copy of the puzzle to act as the answer sheet.

TEACHER’S ANSWER SHEET

Each puzzle has the answers in itself before being cut into puzzle pieces. The equations on the outer edges of the puzzle will not have answers to match. This makes the puzzle more challenging

Sequences and nth term | Introducing Algebra

By LittleStreams

This is the fifth and final workbook in our Introducing Algebra series.

This pack is filled with worksheets designed to introduce students to patterns and linear sequenes, and to develop an understanding of the nth term, and how to use it to find any term of the sequence. It covers some common sequences that are not linear, such as square numbers and the fibonacci sequence, but doesn’t require finding or using the nth term of these. Each worksheet is differentiated 3 ways.

Also included are the same worksheets, but put into differentiated workbooks, so you can hand these to your students to use as homework, or an ongoing project.

The worksheets consist of the following:

Worksheet 1 Patterns of Shapes - introduces students to basic patters using shapes.

Worksheet 2 Gaps in the Sequence - introduces number sequences, and what rules they follow (for example, starting at 2, add 3 to each term).

Worksheet 3 Function Machines - solidifies the link between a rule and a pattern by using Function Machines.

Worksheet 4 Fencing In - covers 2 pages, and follows a pattern of fences. Students find the next in the sequence. For the highest differentiation of this worksheets, students need to already know how to find an nth term.

Worksheet 5 Dinner Table Conundrum - similar to worksheet 4, with a focus on following a pattern of tables and chairs. Differentiation 1 does not require the nth term.

Worksheet 6 Fishing for Sequences - involves finding numbers that match a pattern. Both the nth term and the rule for the sequence is given.

Worksheet 7 The nth Term - requires students to both find the nth term of a linear sequence, and to find terms of a given nth term.

Worksheet 8 Riddle Me This - consists of a riddle that reveals a famous mathematician.

Worksheet 9 Nth Term in Words - delves deeper into recognising linear sequences and understanding how to find specific terms and checking if a given value will appear in the sequence.

Worksheet 10 Fibonacci and Pascal’s Triangle - offers a challenge by looking at both the Fibonacci Sequence and Pascals Triangle

This is available in a bundle along side Factoring and substitution, One and Two step equations, Forming and solving Linear Equations and Sequences and nth Term. If you get the bundle, you'll also receive a free revision test and check list. (If you have purchased these individually, or bought 3 workbooks from the bundle, get in touch at littlestreams@gmail.com and we will send you the revision booklet in an email).
