Romeo and Juliet FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE ACTIVITY: Glossary, Quiz, Answer Key

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

Looking for a figurative language activity for William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet? This resource invites students to identify various types of figurative language found in Romeo and Juliet. The resource features a glossary with definitions of 7 types of figurative language as well as examples of how they're used in passages from the play. The resource also includes a three-page quiz in which students have to identify the type of figurative language used in each of 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. For teachers, the resource features an answer key that will enable you to grade students' quizzes quickly and efficiently.

Here's what you'll find in this editable 7-page resource:

  • Glossary of Figurative Language: The glossary features definitions for the 7 types of figurative language which appear most prominently in Romeo and Juliet: metaphor, simile, paradox, oxymoron, personification, apostrophe, and hyperbole. The glossary also includes examples of how Shakespeare uses each type of figurative language in passages from early scenes in the Romeo and Juliet. So you'll be able to review the types of figurative language with students before they've finished the play — and before they take the quiz. (1 page)
  • Quiz on Figurative Language: The quiz challenges students to identify 7 types of figurative language — metaphor, simile, paradox, oxymoron, personification, apostrophe, and hyperbole — used across 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. (3 pages)
  • Answer Key: The answer key provides the correct answer for each question on the quiz. Having an answer key will enable teachers to grade and return the quiz with speed and efficiency. (3 pages)

This entire resource will come to you in two separate formats: Word Docs *and* PDFs. Because the Word docs are fully editable, you'll be able to customize them to match the skill levels of your students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to access PDF versions — which are easy to navigate and quick to print.

Rigorous Resources is your one-stop shop for top-quality resources on William Shakespeare. Wishing you an amazing experience with teaching Romeo and Juliet. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I love hearing from fellow teachers who share a passion for great literature!

Fry Sight Word Checklist, Sight Words Flash Card (9th 100)

By The Responsive Educator

Fry Sight Words Checklist, Sight Words Flash Card 9th 100

Continuing the progression in sight word mastery, the Fry Sight Words Checklist, Sight Words Flash Card 9th 100 further extends the foundational assessment initiated with the previous sets of 100 Fry sight words.

Key Features
Maintaining the meticulous design, this checklist encompasses the subsequent 100 Fry sight words, adhering to the consistent layout of 9 columns per page. Each column allows for date recording, staff signatures, word tracking, and percentage calculations, ensuring comprehensive and consistent assessment across multiple practice trials.

Available in both full-color and black-and-white versions, this resource maintains adaptability for various printing needs, ensuring suitability for diverse classroom settings.

Focused Goal Setting
Continuing to support educators, the Fry Sight Words Checklist 9th 100 facilitates precise IEP goal establishment aligned with the new set of 100 Fry sight words.

Complementary Practice Tools
Supplementing the checklist, dedicated flashcards tailored to the ninth set of 100 Fry sight words offer essential reinforcement and practice support, fostering a consistent and effective learning experience.

Why Learning the 9th 100 Fry Sight Words Matters
Extending beyond prior word sets, mastery of this additional grouping significantly enriches reading capabilities and overall language proficiency. This resource represents a pivotal step in advancing reading fluency, strengthening confidence, and nurturing sustained reading development.

Advantages of Fry Words over Dolch Words The Fry Sight Words list is organized into 10 groups of 100 words each, covering the most frequently used words in writing. Starting with the initial 300 words in early education significantly boosts reading and comprehension skills. While Fry words aren't strictly tied to specific grades, they're usually introduced in sets of 100 words to support gradual sight word recognition. Here's a general guide for introducing these sets:

  • First 100 Fry Words: Typically introduced in kindergarten and first grade.
  • Second 100 Fry Words: Taught in first or second grade, reinforcing foundational words.
  • Third 100 Fry Words: Added in second or third grade, including more complex words.
  • Fourth 100 Fry Words: Introduced in third or fourth grade, advancing vocabulary.
  • Fifth 100 Fry Words: Presented in fourth or fifth grade, offering more challenging words.

The 6th to 10th sets of 100 Fry words are usually introduced later, depending on the student's mastered words.
