Poetry Activities (by date, oldest first)

A fun, simple toddler and preschool friendly dragon yoga sequence.

A Powerpoint which provides a brief overview of rhythm and rhyme scheme using poetry. I've used this as an introduction to poetry and pair this up with a poem in which students must find the rhyme scheme. It can be used with any poem.

Getting students excited about poetry and figurative language can be difficult. I find that putting it into terms of music often with popular songs makes the process more enjoyable for them and myself. This product contains a powerpoint with links to videos, worksheets which examine both figurative language and poetry, and most of is an interactive lesson that will have your students singing while they're learning.

This product includes 30 graphic organizers of different historical women. Students fill out the graphic organizer by conducting research on their given person and then are given instructions on how to write an acrostic biographical poem. Rubric for the final poem is included in this product. Great for project for Women's History Month.

These acorn sentence writing prompts are perfect for a fall writing center. There are 8 prompts for factual and opinion writing and 2 prompts for autumn acrostic poems. Each prompt is available with two writing line versions. Opinion and factual prompt pages also include a section for students to draw a picture of what they wrote.

These fall writing prompts help students be successful with writing. Coming up with a topic to write about is often then hardest part of writing. Each prompt gives students a that starting point to begin writing.

Nothing like catching two curriculum areas in one. This assignment will help you meet expectations in both music and language. This activity features an engaging escape room in which students tackle 5 puzzles covering plot, figurative language, story elements and quotes from Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task (and it is!), but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. It is the perfect activity for Halloween or any day you want to shake it up with your students without sacrificing learning. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

In this escape room, students will try to escape out of the narrator's basement of horror by solving 4 different puzzles, discovering a hidden message through hidden jig saw puzzle pieces, and finding clues along the way.

• In the first task, students must order the plot events of The Black Cat on Freytag's Pyramid. Once solved, corresponding letters reveal the first code.
• In the second task, students must identify 7 types of figurative language within the short story. Highlighted boxes in the correct answers will reveal the code.
• In the third task, students must solve a word maze. Letters collected along the way unscrambled will reveal the code.
• In the fourth task, students must answer challenging multiple choice questions about The Black Cat that when correct, will reveal the code.
• In the fifth and final task, students must discover the hidden message (a quote from The Black Cat) using puzzle pieces they collected during the first four tasks.
