Hero's Journey ESCAPE ROOM

By Language Arts Excellence

If you are looking for the perfect way to review the hero's journey with your students using a rigorous yet engaging activity, look no further than this Hero's Journey ESCAPE ROOM!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Hero's Journey Escape Room. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

Though your students have been learning about the 12 stages, 8 archetypes, and countless examples of the hero's journey through literature and film, it is time for them to become heroes themselves by escaping your classroom! In order to do this, they must work in small teams to solve 5 different puzzles related to the hero's journey, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way.

  • The 12 Stages: In the first task, students must match each stage of the hero's journey with its definition by drawing a line connecting them. These lines will intersect with letters that once unscrambled, will form their first code word.
  • A Heroine's Journey: In the second task, students must correctly identify the 12 stages of the hero’s journey within The Wizard of Oz and place on a chart. When cards are assembled correctly, shaded boxes will reveal their second code.
  • Guess Who: In the third task, students must play "Guess Who" by reading descriptions of 8 characters from popular hero's journey tales and identify which character archetype they represent. Letters within the correct answers will reveal their third code.
  • Hero Worship: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of Amy Lowell's Hero-Worship. The letters of the multiple choice question answers about the poem will form the fourth code.
  • Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must answer the final question, "What is the difference between a hero and an ordinary man?", by assembling a jig saw puzzle. Once assembled correctly, a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson will reveal the answer.

Product Includes:

- Escape Room Basics

- Detailed Day-Of Instructions

- Escape Room Print & Classroom Preparation Checklist

- Student Teams Chart

- Materials for 5 Tasks: task signs to be folded upright, task instructions (2 per page for easy printing), and necessary information to be kept at stations

- Student Answer Sheet

- Teacher Answer Keys

- Escape Room Reflection for homework or in-class writing assignment

This escape room is ideal for reviewing the hero's journey in your classroom. Students will need to know the 12 stages and the 8 archetypes in order to complete the activity.

Students will read about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Samuel Cornish, William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This activity will have students reading about how each individual aided the abolition movement. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!
