Using these classic books, teach your students about quarter rest! Sing/chant/play along with the rhymes I wrote for the books and add in rhythm sticks for fun! Then use the beat charts and worksheets to reinforce decoding skills as well as teach students to listen and recognize rests as well as practice writing them. "Bear's New Friend" and "Bear Feels Scared" also have recorder and barred instrument parts that would be fun for the older grades. "Bear Can't Sleep" has an ostinato part as well. Where is the Object? These seasonal sight word game is great for students who are practicing sight word recognition and beginning reading skills. This game can be used in a pocket chart or on a table top for an early education classroom.

They have been designed to promote thinking and understanding. Tasks can be completed independently, collaboratively or alongside a teacher. The units have been planned so that over the course of the book, students will become familiar with and well-practised in using comprehension strategies to make meaning from text.

Activities include:

• COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES FOR EACH CHAPTER
• Comprehension strategies - inference, prediction , visualising, questioning, retrieving information, activating prior knowledge, making connections, summarizing, analysing, synthesising, understanding vocabulary in context.
• Literacy Skills - sequencing, cause and effect, main idea and events, compare and contrast, point of view, venn diagrams, writing, point of view, vocabulary work.
• Story elements - character descriptions, character analysis, character emotions, character challenges, setting, plot, theme,
• Book response - creative responses, written responses, critical thinking.

All activities have been designed with student engagement at the forefront. In responding to the book, students will be required to think both within and beyond the text. Children learn best when they are having fun! Even better that they are learning the love of books at the same time!

Use these books to teach rhythm versus steady beat as well as review solfege syllables and hand signs by singing the chants on a so-mi. Add pitched and un-pitched percussion as well. Additional worksheets and rhythm/beat charts help to reinforce decoding skills and teach about quarter rest. Can be used across multiple grade levels PreK-2nd grade as well as separately from the books if needed.
