Living and Nonliving Picture Sort and Writing Activity

By Science and STEAM Team

Students will learn about the needs of all living things when you show them and discuss our mini-poster. Then they will complete a living and nonliving sort. There are 12 beautiful photographs of animals, 12 of different types of plants, and 12 of non-living things. Each photograph has the name of the object printed underneath it. These can be laminated and cut out so that students can sort them under the labels living and non-living (also included). This can be done with the whole group, in small groups or at centers. If this is done at centers putting 6 pictures from each category out allows for the center to be done twice.

There are 2 follow-up worksheets at slightly different levels, so you can choose what is best for your individual students' needs.

Short a Blending And Mapping Activity| Flip, Tap, Write, Build, Use

By An Enchanted Educator

Looking for an activity to help students work on decoding and encoding simultaneously? Short a Flip, Tap, Write, Build, Use resource helps students practice just that.

How? Students flip a picture card over, these are focused on a specific phonics pattern, to get their word. Next students work on tapping out the sound. They can use the Elkonin boxes or the guide dots to help track the sounds tapped. After they will build the words by writing a letter for each sound made and using letter tiles(that are provided, so no need to search or organize tiles, just print, cut, and use). Lastly, the student uses the word to create a sentence.

This activity makes for a great center, small group work, independent practice, and even homework.

Need a way to hold them accountable?

No worries, there is a recording sheet available where students can record a few of their flips. All they have to do is write the word and the sentence on the sheet. This gives you a glimpse into their understanding and insures that they are indeed working during center, small group, and independent work time.

Included in the resource:

⭐2 work mats for Flip Tap Write Build Use

⭐1 page with 2 sets of letter tiles for short CVC words

⭐1 set of picture cards in black and white

⭐1 set of picture cards in color

⭐One recording sheet

Looking for something without as many moving parts? This is a simplified version of Flip, Tap, Write, Build, Use. It focuses just on the building of the words from a given picture. Just print and use.)
