This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level. This resource includes a total of 40 pictured initial /h/ CV and CVC words to use the h-insertion trick during speech therapy sessions.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

These activity mats (les voyelles) were designed with the K-3 teacher in mind. As you introduce new sounds to your Kindergarten/Grade One students, you can use the image pages for students to show sound recognition and phonemic awareness before they are able to identify letters/graphemes. As students grow in confidence, you can add the element of identifying CV sounds or VC sounds containing the target sound. Each mat has 6 cards that will contain the target sound. Students choose the card they think is the correct one, and attach the card to the mat with Velcro dots. The third and final level is identifying the target sound inside a word. Students will need to decode sounds to correctly determine the 6 matching cards that go on the mat. This resource will grow with your students as their abilities grow.

How to prepare this resource:

Make a copy of each page and laminate the page

Cut out the activity mat (the part on the left side of the page) and the activity cards (12 cards per mat)

Insert all the materials into a plastic bag, zipper pouch, or activity basket and you have a brand new independent work station for your Science of Reading lesson!

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Using Exit Cards is an effective way to evaluate the progress each student. These can be used as Entrance or Exit cards depending on how it works best for you and your students. Which card is shared first, Entrance or Exit, is up to the teacher. The order is not dependent. Entrance cards are used for the purpose of helping students synthesize their learning. In addition to a variety of engaging activities centered around education, the lesson plan includes a close reading of the book and the watching of a video that is related to the overall themes and topics presented in this book. Students will engage in multiple activities where they will practice the following skills: inferencing, compare and contrast, and self-to-text, text-to-text, and world-to-text connections. • They start with Matter and Structure where they learn about physical properties focusing on Solubility, Conductivity, Elasticity, Hardness, Reflectivity, and Texture, and how to observe physical properties. Physical properties are introduced,

• Students then learn briefly about the periodic table and its history, and atoms. Students will also use pixel art to familiarize themselves with the table and complete a project!

• Students go to chemical properties after and learn how to measure and be introduced to the conservation of mass via lab work.

• Lastly, Students will learn about Heterogenous and Homogenous Mixtures. They will be given an overview of changing state to refresh prior knowledge and how that assists in understanding mixtures. They complete a summative lab that focuses on mixtures with a bonus extension challenge.
