Class Unity Jigsaw: Celebrating Diversity and Building a Class Community

By SEN Resource Source

Class set of 30 blank puzzle pieces that fit together to make one big puzzle. Each child can decorate their piece as they wish. The finished jigsaw can then prompt discussions about how although the individual pieces are all different they come together to make one whole, similar to their class - each person is different but they come together to make a class.

Why do you need this?

This activity allows each student to express their individuality and uniqueness by decorating their own jigsaw piece. This promotes inclusivity and celebrates the diversity within the classroom. As students work together to create a complete jigsaw puzzle, they learn the value of collaboration, teamwork, and unity.

How and when might you use this?

This activity could be used in a variety of ways:

  • Teachers may use this activity at the start of the school year, the teacher can introduce the activity as an icebreaker to help students get to know one another. Each student decorates their jigsaw piece with symbols, images, or words that represent their personality, interests, or background.
  • Throughout the school year, the teacher can incorporate the activity as part of ongoing efforts to build a strong classroom community. By completing the jigsaw puzzle together, students learn the importance of collaboration, teamwork, and respecting each other's differences.
  • The activity can be used to celebrate cultural diversity within the classroom. Students can decorate their jigsaw pieces to represent aspects of their cultural heritage, such as flags, traditional symbols, or family customs. This allows students to share and learn about each other's backgrounds in a positive and inclusive way.
  • Towards the end of the school year, the completed jigsaw puzzle can serve as a symbol of the class's journey together. The teacher can facilitate a reflection activity where students share their thoughts and feelings about the collaborative process and the significance of each piece in creating a unified whole.

What’s included?

30 worksheets each with a different blank puzzle piece.

Behavior Tracking Sheet for self-assessment

By Rebekah Poe Teaching

Students can complete this behavior tracker to show how well they were able to:

Follow directions

Participate

Have a positive attitude

Stay on task

Complete work

I added room for the teacher to write in how many (if any) prompts are acceptable to follow directions and stay on task. I also left room for a percentage of work that should be completed. I know often my special education students struggle to complete assignments due to lack of focus, etc. So I might put that one student needs to complete 70% of his assignment and then gradually increase it. There is space for that to be written in in the chart.

Students can choose a big smiley face, a small smiling face, and a frowning face to show how well they were able to maintain the directives. At the bottom there is room for teacher signature and comments. At the top, the student has space to write what assignment he or she is assessing.

Two sheets print per page to save paper.

By Manic Math Teacher

Free download! This download includes Page 1 only out of 12 in this set, interested in more? Check out the entire set here: Mindful Mandalas - Attention Set #1 - Mindfulness, Coloring Activity

Introducing our "Mindfulness Mandala Coloring Page" – a wonderful tool to help our students embrace mindfulness and cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness. This thoughtfully designed mandala coloring page is more than just an art activity; it's a gateway to mindfulness and emotional exploration.

As a teacher, I understand the importance of nurturing our students' well-being and providing them with tools to navigate the challenges they may face. That's why I'm excited to offer this "Mindfulness Mandala Coloring Page" as an extra assignment to encourage our students to consider mindfulness.

The captivating mandala design is created to capture their attention and transport them to a world of tranquility and creativity. Through coloring, students can find a moment of respite from the demands of their studies and immerse themselves in the present moment.

Each page includes prompts such as, "Imagine the mandala as a garden of emotions. Explore how different colors can nurture and cultivate the emotional landscape within you," provides a gentle invitation for our students to engage in self-reflection. As they select colors and fill in the intricate patterns, they can observe the emotions that arise and embrace the unique beauty of each stroke.

By incorporating mindfulness into their coloring experience, students can develop a greater sense of emotional intelligence and self-compassion. This assignment offers an opportunity for them to understand that emotions are fluid, and just like the mandala, they change and evolve over time.

I believe that promoting mindfulness among our students can help them manage stress, enhance focus, and develop empathy towards themselves and others. Encouraging this "Mindfulness Mandala Coloring Page" as an extra assignment is my way of supporting their emotional well-being and fostering a positive learning environment.

Let's embark on this mindful journey together, guiding our students toward self-awareness and personal growth with the "Mindfulness Mandala Coloring Page." I'm excited to witness the positive impact it will have on their lives, both inside and outside the classroom.

Worry Jar Worksheet

By SEN Resource Source

In this worksheet children can write their worries down in the jar to try and help alleviate some of the associated stress and anxiety.

Why do you need this?

By externalizing their worries onto paper, children may feel a sense of relief and reduced anxiety, as they no longer carry the burden of their worries alone. It encourages children to identify and articulate their worries, which is the first step towards finding solutions and coping strategies to address them.

How and when might you use this?

This worksheet can be used in a variety of ways:

· During counselling sessions this worksheet can be used to facilitate discussions with students who may be experiencing anxiety or stress.

· Small group activities to promote peer interaction and mutual support for those suffering with anxiety or worries.

· Social-emotional learning lessons focused on emotional expression, stress management, or coping strategies.

· As part of a mental health curriculum the worksheet can be used to teach children about the nature of worries and fears, as well as strategies for managing them effectively.
