This social story is designed to support children who are terrified of insects. Using simple language and reassuring visuals, the story addresses feelings of fear and provides logical reasons to help children understand that insects are generally harmless due to their small size. It explains the positive roles insects play in our environment, such as pollination and decomposition, highlighting their importance.
The story also offers practical strategies to manage and reduce fear, such as deep breathing, focusing on positive aspects of insects, and learning more about them in a safe way.
Ideal for parents, teachers, and caregivers, this story helps children build confidence and develop a healthier perspective on insects, making it easier to overcome their fears and appreciate the role insects play in the world.
What is included?
As well as a 21 page social story there is also a shortened adapted book version of the story with movable pictures to attach to each page.
Why do you need this?
The point of a social story is to use a patient and reassuring tone to teach children about social situations in a way that can be easily understood. Social stories can be useful for any child who is struggling to understand a situation or concept or needs help to understand a social skill or social cue, expectations, perspectives, common responses or is troubled about an upcoming event but social stories are particularly useful for children on the autistic spectrum for whom social cues can be challenging and who often suffer anxiety if they do not know what to expect from a situation.
How and when might you use this?
· To implement a social story, you should first ensure that you have eliminated distractions; that it is just you and the child sitting together focussed on the story.
· Initially you should read the story through twice with the child but it is then vital to revisit it regularly.
· Try to find a way to incorporate the story into the child's daily schedule.
· If the story is relating to a particular inappropriate behavior, it is useful to read the story when this behavior occurs, you do not however want the story to be seen as any kind of punishment.
· Regularly praise your child and keep it a positive experience.
These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them.

Anticipation Guides are excellent tools that can be used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic and/or to share ideas about key concepts. Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!! This Anticipation Guide and Self-Assessment focuses on Relationships.
You can use an Anticipation Guide:

ANTICIPATION GUIDES
There is ONE Anticipation Guide that comes in two different variations:
▶️ Variation #1:
⭐ Part 1: The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.
⭐ Part 2: The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.
▶️ Variation #2: This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." Students are instructed to read each statement and mark either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE." They are then encouraged to elaborate on their thoughts or ideas regarding each statement in the designated "COMMENTS" column.
*******************************
SELF-ASSESSMENT
This resource contains a single Relationships Self-Assessment. Students are asked to evaluate their interpersonal skills by scoring a list of statements related to relationships and interpersonal skills. They will score each statement: 2 for “Regularly," 1 for “Occasionally," and 0 for "Never." They will then use the results at the bottom of the assessment to reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement in relationships.
These assessment statements can also serve as a means to explore students' competencies and viewpoints regarding the topic!

This resource is also included in Google Slides! Text boxes have already been created to make it easier for you and your students! Each slide includes two instruction solution tabs for when students accidentally delete text boxes and when they want to zoom in (to enlarge worksheets). Behavior Tracking Sheet for self-assessment
By Rebekah Poe Teaching
Students can complete this behavior tracker to show how well they were able to:
Follow directions
Participate
Have a positive attitude
Stay on task
Complete work
I added room for the teacher to write in how many (if any) prompts are acceptable to follow directions and stay on task. I also left room for a percentage of work that should be completed. I know often my special education students struggle to complete assignments due to lack of focus, etc. So I might put that one student needs to complete 70% of his assignment and then gradually increase it. There is space for that to be written in in the chart.
Students can choose a big smiley face, a small smiling face, and a frowning face to show how well they were able to maintain the directives. At the bottom there is room for teacher signature and comments. At the top, the student has space to write what assignment he or she is assessing.
Two sheets print per page to save paper.
