When people do things we don’t like, we get upset, angry, hurt, and/or disappointed because they don’t act or behave in a manner that we want or expect them to. Sometimes, we try to force or manipulate them into acting and behaving a certain way. We need to give up on trying to control others by letting them make their own decisions and verbalizing and dealing with our disappointments in an appropriate manner.

It is important for teenagers to understand that the way they react and respond to situations can either add fuel to the fire or diffuse tension, resolve conflict, and minimize negative emotions. Teaching teens how to respond appropriately to situations both verbally and nonverbally, even when they are angry, hurt, and disappointed can greatly help them prevent conflicts from escalating.

This resource includes a total of 12 Text Messaging Activity Worksheets that come in four different text messaging formats! There are three worksheets for each format, totaling 12 text messaging worksheets. Students are asked to read a text message, some longer than others, and respond appropriately. I added room for the teacher to write in how many (if any) prompts are acceptable to follow directions and stay on task. I also left room for a percentage of work that should be completed. I know often my special education students struggle to complete assignments due to lack of focus, etc. So I might put that one student needs to complete 70% of his assignment and then gradually increase it. There is space for that to be written in in the chart.

Students can choose a big smiley face, a small smiling face, and a frowning face to show how well they were able to maintain the directives. At the bottom there is room for teacher signature and comments. At the top, the student has space to write what assignment he or she is assessing.

Two sheets print per page to save paper.

If your students are going over fixed and growth mindset, this activity could be for you. Resource includes 32 task cards with different statements. Students simply cut out each task card and sort them into two different piles. Great way to see your students understanding of growth mindset, discussion opener, exit ticket, etc.
