In our global society, our students need to understand how **cultures are developed **and how they adapt to and adopt practices and beliefs from others through cultural diffusion. As students understand cultures vs subcultures, it will help them navigate and appreciate the diverse world we live in. • Shakespearean Insult Generator: Shakespeare's characters are exceptionally creative in their elaboration of insults. Indeed, some scholars have suggested that the insults in Shakespeare's plays amount to their own education in wit. If your students are sufficiently mature, you could use this exercise to invite them to generate their own original Shakespearean insults. (2 pages)

Want your Spanish students to learn about Day of the Dead , but  reading comprehension is getting boring in your Spanish class?  Turn it into a game!  This mystery-solving reading about Día de Muertos  goes from dull to exciting as students work together and move around the room to solve a mystery!  This is a simple “print and go” with no work for the teacher!  

   Students investigate with Maria, a young person from Mexico, while she tries to understand more about a former member of her town.  He visits the townspeople all year, not just during Día de Muertos.  Why can’t he rest in peace?   While they read the parts, they are also looking for “code words”.  Students record the code words on a special answer sheet that will eventually lead them to solving the mystery of how/why he died.   It’s so much fun! 

    After, you can decide which of the 4 follow-up activities you want to do with your students.  There are 4; a True or False Activity to check for basic comprehension, a graphic organizer for students to learn more about the specific items related to Day of the Dead, a “tell me in your own words” activity,  and a writing follow up where students use their reading comprehension and critical thinking to invent an explanation for who this lost soul was and why he died the way he did.  Answer key to the True/False is also included.  Best of all?  If there’s something you’d like to change for your students, you are free to edit!

The reading cards are written in English for your Novice classes.  The questions are written in English and answers will be in English as well.  The instructions and mission are written in English.  Students get the benefit of learning about a cultural event while using teamwork!
