To get a pattern to STICK in a new readers brain we need to read AND spell with a word and provide context. These self-correcting picture cards are perfect to achieve that goal!

Within this product your child will be exposed to beginning and end blends with short vowels. You can have the child read the card and flip it over to see if the picture matches the word or you can use the spelling mats to have the child look at the picture, say the word, and spell the word. When they are done they can flip the card over to check their spelling.

It is important for a child to understand what a syllable IS and how to break words apart into syllables! When children begin to read and write multisyllabic words it will be vital they understand how to break the word into their syllables! This is a great hands-on and engaging way to work on syllables! Have some fun with your phonics this fall! This set is provided in both b/w & color. Prepare the color activities so you can use again and again! Students will interact with the materials to practice identification of initial, medial, and final sounds. In addition, differentiated pages are provided to work on identification of all sounds within a CVC word.

Initial Sounds: Use the apple orchard mat when working on initial sounds. 26 apple cards are included. Students will pick up the card, say the word, and identify the initial sound. All consonants and short vowels are represented:

Medial Short Vowel direct instruction, stations, and Boom cards!

Students will use a variety of activities to reinforce understanding of medial short vowel sounds. When teaching medial sounds I use a roller coaster arm motion providing emphasis of the medial sound at the top of the coaster. To reinforce this, I have made a visual students can use.

Direct Instruction Activity -

• Use the roller coaster and cars to segment words provided on the picture cards. Students will drive the coaster cars, identify the medial sound at the top of the coaster.
• This activity can be done over multiple days - you can focus on one vowel at a time (bring in mirrors so students can see the placement of their tongue when annunciating the short vowel sounds). You can also mix up all 5 short vowel sounds to determine if students are able to identify their sounds.
• Pictures provided have a short vowel focus, with a bonus 20 long vowel pictures.

Stations - Laminate the materials for extended use.

• Clip Cards (30 cards) - use expo markers or clothing pin to select the correct medial sound.
• Sorting (30 pictures) - Sort the pictures to the correct short sound
• 30 cards with pictures and beginning / ending sounds. Students will fill in the medial sound

Short Vowel Tab book - For extra practice, or direct instruction complete a tab book with your students. I have included a different set of pictures.

Set one: Students select the correct word from a choice of 3 matching the picture.

Set two: Students will select the correct picture for the word that is provided.

Blend and segment one syllable CVC and CVCe words with these phonics reading mats. These hands on reading mats allow students a fun and engaging way to practice reading simple words.

These reading and blending mats are easy to differentiate for students learning different phonics concepts. Students can be given on the letter cards for the sounds they have mastered or are currently practicing to create, blend, and read the words. How to Use:

Print each set of cards on different colored card stock (beginning sounds on one color, vowels on another color and ending sounds on a third color). Place each set of cards face in on the mats in the right order. Have the student read the word made. Record the word on one of the recording sheets. Have the student move 1 card from 1 of the stacks to make a new word. (See Video Preview)

Practice reading and spelling CVCe words. Students can get practice filling in the missing letters in the magic e words. Print the silent e letter tiles in a different color to show students the E does not make a sound!

This set contains 35 unique CVCe cards where students can complete hands on word work activities. There is a set of cards that focus on beginning sounds, middle sounds, magic e, as well as a set that focuses on spelling the CVCe words.

This is a low prep center where you just need to print, laminate and cut out the cards. You can mark clothespins with the correct letters for students to clip to the cards in the correct space. You can use the letter tiles provided in this packet to complete the cards. You can also use magnetic letters, wooden or plastic letter tiles, or any other letter manipulative to fill in the missing letters.

CVCe Spelling BOOM Cards

Learn about affixes with these prefix and suffix activities. This resource includes reading cards, posters, puzzles, and worksheets for students to practice identifying the different parts of the words.

I created these editable fluency probes to meet the diverse needs of teachers who want to provide additional practice opportunities that target the skills being taught within the curriculum!

Provide tier 2 and tier 3 instruction on concepts taught within the tier 1 curriculum!

DIRECTIONS:

• In the gray boxes at the top of the columns below the arrow links, enter the information you would like to appear at the top of the probe. This could be the lesson and skill, student name and skill, student name and date, etc.
• Enter the items (phrases and sentences) you would like to be randomized on the probe. You can enter up to 20 items. The fewer the items, the more frequently they will be repeated on the probe.
• Select the arrow link to jump to the probe. Click in the empty cell below the arrow and press “Delete” on your keyboard to shuffle the words if needed.
• Once the words are arranged the way you would like them, press CTRL/Command +C on your keyboard or select the print icon.
• Probes should be printed in portrait orientation with normal scale and margins. To print multiple probes, select “Workbook” under “Print” and adjust the selection by unchecking the boxes and pressing the “Apply” button.
• Probes can be used for stations, small group work, shared reading, or as home practice!
