"The Gift of the Magi" Language Study

By Colleen Burdette

Build understanding of unusual words and phrases:

When reading "The Gift of the Magi" my students came across several words and phrases that were unknown to them. Some of the words or phrases are out of date, some are not part of the students' life experience. This activity helps the students to build an understanding of the unknown words. This understanding helps to build comprehension of the story. Building vocabulary leads to stronger readers.

Students enjoy searching for images to help with understanding. They can search the images through Google or directly through the Google Slide.

What's included:

  • Instructional slide.
  • Activity slides.

How is this resource useful:

  • No prep for teachers.
  • Builds understanding for students.
  • Greater vocabulary leads to better reading comprehension.

Virtual Escape Room - The Lorax Themed - Comprehension and Spelling

By A Teachers Sidekick

This is a virtual escape room to complete with your students after reading Dr. Seuss's The Lorax. Students will be answering comprehension questions about the story and also having to fill in the blanks for some sight/spelling words. Students could complete this in groups or as individuals.

I would recommend giving students 30 minutes to complete this escape room and displaying that timer in your classroom or on your screen somehow. The only things students will need are a device and maybe a whiteboard or paper for taking notes while they complete the escape room. I hope you enjoy it. Please rate and review.

⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻

This resource bundle is great for:

  • Distance learning
  • Independent work
  • Homework
  • Guided reading sessions
  • Assessment practice
  • Reading interventions

These activities are online resources, that use Google Forms, and are linked to your Google Drive. They can be completed by students online using tablets, phones or computers, and are easily assessed by teachers as all the answers are provided in a quick and easy format.

⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻

Time allowance to complete each activity:

5-10 minutes - read through the text individually.

40-50 minutes - answer questions using the text as guidance (including extension activity)

Time allowance to assess:

A class set of activities might take around 15-20 minutes to mark; the teacher can then send the students their marks automatically, which allows them to read back through their work. Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.

Please ensure when you download this resource into Google Drive that you are logged in to the gmail account where you wish to store the activity. In the past teachers have downloaded resources into their school account in error. Thanks :)

Digital End of the Year Memory Book - Google Slides

By Kile's Classroom

Digital Writing Activity - Fun and Engaging!

Post this Google Slides as an assignment in Google Classroom and set it for students to make a copy of the document, or project the link so your students can make a copy of this Google Slides presentation.

The students open the Google Slides Document “Copy of Growth Mindset Journal” from their Google Drive and change the words “Copy of” to their name.

The students can take pictures with the camera on their device, upload photos to a folder in Google Drive, or you can share a folder of class photos in Google Drive that the students can use.

The students can complete this activity over their favorite memories of the school year. This can be done in one day, or over the course of a week. At the end of the project, you can print each student’s journal so they can have a hard copy.
