Help students to manage goal setting and meeting goals with the Resolution Sheet and Resolution Calendar. This is a fun, creative and engaging intervention for students who have difficulty with persistent lying. This intervention helps students project their internal beliefs and fears about themselves onto the monster that they create and imagine and gain acceptance from you.

Although this isn’t a directive/skills-based intervention, this mini-lesson has been successful at supporting students who have a history of lying. Students are encouraged to create their own monster and explore key aspects of their monster. This intervention includes various activities, reflective questions and worksheets.

Within this intervention the monster is also encouraged to play two truths and a lie so that they play intentional truth telling and lying. Additional creative stories will be journaled to support students to understand the distinction between imagination and reality. This intervention takes the focus off the child "lying" and allow them to explore it in a creative way that isn't directed at them.

This therapeutic intervention requires the therapist to be very curious and unconditionally accepting of the monster that the student creates and imagines.

Remember the vital role of empathy and at the end of the intervention thank the student for sharing what they would look like as a monster to support integration.

This AVID strategy of layering focused notes is the perfect instructional routine to display for any class in any subject area! Layering is a strategy that clarifies the second and third phases of the focused note-taking process by asking students to revisit their notes multiple times, thinking critically with a different purpose in mind.

Why layering?

Each layer added to the notes is completed in a different color, so a student’s interactions are visible to the instructor and to the student. This not only allows the instructor to assess the quality of the student’s thinking and interaction with the content, but it also solidifies learning about the process and the content itself. Additionally, the use of color enhances retention for visual learners.

Instructional Goals

Students will:

• Add layers of thinking to their notes to process and connect their thinking.

• Use colors to show their repeated interactions with their notes.

Materials needed

If taking notes on paper, students will need a variety of colored pens, colored pencils, highlighters, and markers to use for the note-taking layers.

Directions

• Provide time for students to complete each layer by adding to their notes with a different color.
• Work on one layer at a time. Consider whether developing learners need more structure or fewer components to add during each layering session, compared with more experienced note-takers.
• Have students keep a key to indicate what color is used for each layer (they can make their own key or use the example.)

Each short story includes comprehension questions throughout. Some of the questions require students to put their feet in the shoes of the characters who are experiencing a problem. This social emotional learning lesson uses Sandra Cisneros's short story Eleven. During this SEL lesson, students read the short story, view a YouTube video, and reflect on their own stress responses. There are journal entries and opportunities for small and large group discussions as well.

This resource includes:

This resource could easily be used by a substitute.

This lesson has always been a favorite of my middle school students. The topic is enlightening for kids who have felt stress responses without understanding what is really happening in their brains and bodies (pretty much all kids). Eleven is a fantastic story to use when learning about stress response because readers are often frustrated by the way the main character responds to the stressor she faces. This is a great way to integrate SEL into an English class.

Many students struggle with anger management and emotional regulation skills. This Anger Management Workbook helps kids learn how to put their feelings into words and strategies to self-regulate their emotions. Fast, easy assembly (fold, print, staple), combined with social stories and calming techniques for children, makes for the perfect activity for kids struggling with managing their anger.

Definition:
A Mini Socratic Seminar is a scholarly discussion of an essential question in which student opinions are shared and refined through dialogue with other students in small groups. In this mini format, the teacher or seminar leader facilitates the discussion for the small groups.

Seminar Directions:

• Students choose a group based on the category that best fits them.
• The teacher poses the essential question.
• Students respond to the question through note-taking.
• The teacher chooses a Socratic Seminar leader for each group.
• The leader facilitates the seminar discussion by guiding group members to a deeper and more clarified consideration of the ideas, respect for varying points of view, and adherence to and respect for the seminar process.
• Students may pose new questions when the discussion is exhausted. New questions posed must relate to students’ ideas and contributions in response to the initial essential question.
• Or leaders use the questions in the Google Slides to guide groups.
• Students write a summary by answering the EQ in their notes after the discussion.

In this product, students will be provided with a list of positive words and will choose 10 positive words that describe themselves. Students will then narrow that list of 10 positive words down to 3. They will explain why that word describes them. Students will answer questions about themselves - Example: What is your favorite color? What is your favorite hobby? etc., Students will then describe themselves - what color eyes they have, what color their hair is, what their favorite thing about themselves is, what is something they want to improve on, etc. Students will draw a picture of themselves, and complete the activity of choosing a mirror, printing it out and putting a picture of themselves in the mirror and can share what they like about themselves. This product can be used independently or when students are working in a group. Students can keep their responses private or can share them with their peers.

This Lesson Plan or Scope and Sequence was created for special education or life skills classes. Each lesson has three levels that are vertically aligned to provide access for ALL students to the standards, the leveled activities are for guided or independent practice. The units are set up in two-week increments and include two whole group lessons with links to videos or songs that align with the unit of study. Each unit repeats itself halfway through the year to ensure that students do not regress but retain what they learned previously. Check out the preview.

Teaching children to cultivate a foundation of compassion, gratitude, confidence & self-love needs to start at a young age. This counseling creative activity encourages children to create their own “Self-Care” snowman. This craft encourages children to reflect and explore who they are, including their qualities & attributes and what makes them unique and special.

What to do:

- Cut out the various snowman parts (head, body, accessories etc.)

- Glue snowman together.

- Complete the three piece sentence sequence – “I feel” “Because” “I need”.

- Don’t forget to give your snowman a name.

You can make as many snowman as you want. Templates are included for different emotions to help students explore their self care when they feel a variety of feelings and reflecting on why they felt that way as well as what they needed to look after themselves and their emotions.
