This social emotional learning lesson uses Sandra Cisneros's short story Eleven. During this SEL lesson, students read the short story, view a YouTube video, and reflect on their own stress responses. There are journal entries and opportunities for small and large group discussions as well.

This resource could easily be used by a substitute.

This lesson has always been a favorite of my middle school students. The topic is enlightening for kids who have felt stress responses without understanding what is really happening in their brains and bodies (pretty much all kids). Eleven is a fantastic story to use when learning about stress response because readers are often frustrated by the way the main character responds to the stressor she faces. This is a great way to integrate SEL into an English class.

This product features an engaging "Effective Effort Talk" activity that will have your students thinking, writing, moving, and speaking about effective effort and growth mindset. In this activity, they must choose between 6 different quotes about effort from famous figures like John F. Kennedy and Theodore Roosevelt and articulate why the quote aligns with their own perspective using their own experiences to explain their opinion. I use this lesson every year to set the tone for the effort I expect for them to put into my class - it is a great way to gain insight about what they currently think about effort and can be referenced throughout the entire year!

This AVID strategy of layering focused notes is the perfect instructional routine to display for any class in any subject area! Layering is a strategy that clarifies the second and third phases of the focused note-taking process by asking students to revisit their notes multiple times, thinking critically with a different purpose in mind.

Why layering?

Each layer added to the notes is completed in a different color, so a student’s interactions are visible to the instructor and to the student. This not only allows the instructor to assess the quality of the student’s thinking and interaction with the content, but it also solidifies learning about the process and the content itself. Instructional Goals

Students will:

• Add layers of thinking to their notes to process and connect their thinking.

• Use colors to show their repeated interactions with their notes.

Materials needed

If taking notes on paper, students will need a variety of colored pens, colored pencils, highlighters, and markers to use for the note-taking layers.

Directions

• Provide time for students to complete each layer by adding to their notes with a different color.
• Work on one layer at a time. Consider whether developing learners need more structure or fewer components to add during each layering session, compared with more experienced note-takers.
• Have students keep a key to indicate what color is used for each layer (they can make their own key or use the example.)

In this product, students will be provided with a list of positive words and will choose 10 positive words that describe themselves. Students will then narrow that list of 10 positive words down to 3. They will explain why that word describes them. Students will answer questions about themselves - Example: What is your favorite color? What is your favorite hobby? etc., Students will then describe themselves - what color eyes they have, what color their hair is, what their favorite thing about themselves is, what is something they want to improve on, etc. Students will draw a picture of themselves, and complete the activity of choosing a mirror, printing it out and putting a picture of themselves in the mirror and can share what they like about themselves. This product can be used independently or when students are working in a group. Students can keep their responses private or can share them with their peers.

This project is a creative way for children to identify and acknowledge their anxieties. Sometimes we all carry around worries. They might be about school, home, friendships or even changes in our life. This activity encourages children to think about their worries and put them on their own worry tree. Definition:
A Mini Socratic Seminar is a scholarly discussion of an essential question in which student opinions are shared and refined through dialogue with other students in small groups. In this mini format, the teacher or seminar leader facilitates the discussion for the small groups.

Seminar Directions:

• Students choose a group based on the category that best fits them.
• The teacher poses the essential question.
• Students respond to the question through note-taking.
• The teacher chooses a Socratic Seminar leader for each group.
• The leader facilitates the seminar discussion by guiding group members to a deeper and more clarified consideration of the ideas, respect for varying points of view, and adherence to and respect for the seminar process.
• Students may pose new questions when the discussion is exhausted. New questions posed must relate to students’ ideas and contributions in response to the initial essential question.
• Or leaders use the questions in the Google Slides to guide groups.
• Students write a summary by answering the EQ in their notes after the discussion.
