"A Christmas Carol" Project: My Own Story

By Colleen Burdette

Tell your own story:

Students enjoy telling their own Christmas stories. In this project, they will write and illustrate their stories of Christmas past, present, and yet to come, in a way that is similar to what happens to Scrooge in the novel.

I used this as a cumulative activity after the students had read the novel and before Christmas Break.

Students loved sharing their stories and hearing the hopes their classmates have for their futures.

What's included:

  • Teacher directions.
  • Past, present, and yet to come templates.

Why this product is useful:

  • Easy prep for teacher.
  • Festive display for the holiday.
  • Students use creativity to illustrate.
  • Great writing practice.

HATCHET Novel STEM | STEAM Building Challenge Task Cards with Sequencing

By Teaching Dinos

Kids will LOVE these independent Hatchet STEM / STEAM Building Challenge Task Cards based on book Hatchet, by Gary Paulson. Pair these problem solving cards with the no-prep STEAM / STEM or sequencing worksheets, include them in your Makerspace, morning tubs, centers, as a reward, or as an activity for early finishers. Perfect for classrooms, homeschool, and even parents looking for fun, adventure filled activities for their children.

What’s included in the 22 page download:

  • 2 pages of 12 unique Full Color Challenge Task Cards
  • 2 STEAM / STEM Worksheets in full color for early and upper elementary
  • 3 Sequencing Worksheets in full color for the 12 challenges
  • Instructions Page
  • Terms of Use, Credits
  • Black and White copies of the task cards, STEM / STEAM, and Sequencing Worksheets

How can you use these task cards?

How can you use these task cards?

⭐Build all the task cards in one sitting. This typically takes 1 – 2 hours to complete the set.

⭐Have the task cards available in makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using any available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them.

⭐Use one card a day during morning time. Have students fill out a STEAM / STEM worksheet with some of the challenges that require more problem solving and creativity.

⭐Practice sequencing by having students do several cards at a time, and then draw pictures of what they built (or the scenarios on the task cards) in the sequencing boxes.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build as many cards as predetermined, and then show and tell with the class or their parents. They can discuss what they made, liked, what they would improve, and how it solved the problem on the task cards. They can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. Encourage students to ask questions to their classmates.

Why do I think you will love this product, and what makes my challenge set unique?

I love stories that bring adventure to life for kids, which force them to use their imaginations in fun and exciting ways. This challenge task set does exactly that through the loose storyline. Interesting scenarios, adventure and disaster, problem solving and learning, are all part of the experience when building these challenges.

Most building challenge task cards are independent from each other. “Build a boat,” or “build an airplane,” are common themes among the cards. While those are fantastic, and we have done many of them ourselves, I wanted to do something different and more cohesive and engaging for kids.

One of the exciting things about this set, is the randomness that occurs with each card. I strongly suggest that children pick only one card (waiting for other children participating to finish each card before moving on), and not previewing what is on the other cards prior to building. Try folding them up and placing into a hat, bowl, or basket to be picked one at a time, as order is not necessary in this set.

The only rule is to HAVE FUN and allow those imaginations to soar!

**Please note that while the intent is for these to be independent, early readers may need some assistance in reading the cards.**

“When Spring Comes” Literacy Integration Lesson Plan

By Lara Hocheiser

The story, When Spring Comes by Kevin Hikes, illustrated by Laura Dronzek, is my daughter’s favorite book year round. It's the perfect story to explore the transition from Winter to Spring. When reading this story to children, they become overjoyed to see the nature and animals related to the springtime. They love to pretend and act out the meaning of the story.

Use this lesson plan while reading When Spring Comes. This is the perfect way to integrate physical activity and mindfulness into storytime. Each page can be brought to life with our yoga sequence and our beautifully-illustrated yoga cards teach children how to do each yoga pose.

When Spring Comes is filled with imagery, alliteration, and repetition. Through this book, we can teach children these valuable literary devices through facilitated discussions, group activities and extension exercises included in this lesson plan. Also included are coloring pages, crafts, breathing exercises, mindfulness activities and more!

When Spring Comes  Literacy Integration is a 24-page PDF download that you can view on your phone, tablet, computer or print to paper.

When Spring Comes Lesson Plan is designed for kids ages 4-10 and includes:
