Glimmers Bulletin Board, Activities & powerpoint to Help kids find their joy!

By Until the Pieces Fit

Glimmers, which are the opposite of triggers are those moments of pure joy and serenity that light up their lives. I use the materials to share and practice glimmers with my students & after just 3 days back the kids have already started using the term "glimmer" when something brings them joy!

The word Glimmers originates from Deb Dana, LCSW, psychotherapist, and author who coined the term. Glimmers which is the opposite of a trigger are those fleeting instances that bring us warmth and peace, offering a profound positive impact on our mental health. With gratitude & written permission from Deb Dana, I'm thrilled to share these activities with fellow educators!

Materials Included:

PowerPoint: Utilize the included PowerPoint slide show to introduce the concept of Glimmers to your students. With 40 slides featuring real-life pictures, students can begin to recognize things that bring them Glimmers. It also helps create connection and shared interests, with their classmates.

Worksheets:

8 student pages

  • identify your glimmers (things that make me happy, included, helpful etc)

  • I feel a glimmer when....

  • track your glimmers

  • Things I see, taste and hear that bring me glimmers

Bulletin Board: Colorful lettering (multiple styles) to make a bulletin board for your classroom or your school. Cards are included for students (& staff) to share the things that bring them glimmers

2 pages of "me and my Glimmer". Take a picture of your students happy with their glimmers & attach to the page. A great reminder of the things that bring us joy.

8x11 Posters: Sprinkle your class or school with five 8x11 posters. Whether it's in your classroom, hallway, or on your door, these posters serve as tangible reminders to celebrate life's Glimmers.

Exploration Beyond: Curious to learn more? Dive into the enlightening USA Today article on Glimmers and their mental health benefits: Link to USA Today Article. You can also explore more about Deb Dana and her insights on regulation at Deb Dana's Website.

Join us in extending a heartfelt thank you to Deb Dana for her gracious permission to incorporate her trademarked concept into these materials, inspiring a wave of positivity and well-being.

*******************************

From the perspective of our students, understanding and interacting with us can be quite challenging, if not downright frustrating! In candid conversations, I've heard students express sentiments like, "Teachers seem to punish the whole class for the actions of one person," "Even though I have anxiety and struggle to speak, they insist on making me present in front of everyone," "Their lessons can be dull, and then they wonder why we zone out," "Sometimes they single me out, even when I haven't volunteered," and "They expect maturity but treat us like children." These grievances are just the tip of the iceberg. Despite our best intentions, our actions and words can often lead to frustration among our students, influencing their behavior, responses, and thoughts.

This resource enables teachers to gain insight into our students' perspectives on specific situations through real-life, everyday scenarios, and vice versa! Students also have the chance to reflect on and understand teachers' viewpoints in these situations.

One buyer stated, "This is great for helping my students practice conflict resolution when an authority figure like a teacher is involved!"

This resource presents everyday, real-life scenarios that help students develop skills for effective interaction with teachers. It aims to foster positive relationships, manage conflicts, enhance social skills and behavior, and, importantly, build confidence in handling emotions when faced with situations where teachers say or do things they find challenging. Through reflections and discussions on these scenarios, students can learn the value of recognizing and understanding various perspectives, enabling them to respond thoughtfully. They will also grasp that the tone and manner of communication can either promote harmony or create tension between teachers and students.

Moreover, this resource provides opportunities for students to:

✅ Gain insight into the motives behind teachers' actions and words.

✅ Engage with teacher situations maturely and respectfully.

✅ Explore diverse problem-solving strategies.

✅ Hone their skills in respectful communication.

✅ Reflect on their own actions and behaviors, considering how they influence teacher responses.

✅ Offer constructive suggestions to teachers for alternative approaches.

✅ Learn to negotiate and find compromises with teachers.

✅ Foster stronger and more positive relationships with teachers.

*******************************

This resource focuses on 44 common, real-life scenarios and issues that students encounter daily. It comprises 176 worksheets centered on these scenarios, each designed to prompt students to consider effective navigation strategies and practice respectful and appropriate responses.

The worksheets are available in four variations, including both print and digital formats.

Worksheet Variation #1: Includes scenario with 3 questions

Worksheet Variation #2: Includes scenario with 2 questions

Worksheet Variation #3: Includes scenarios presented in graphic organizers, where students offer suggestions to teachers on how to handle specific situations and articulate the reasons behind their proposed ideas or solutions.

✅ **Worksheet Variation #4:**Includes scenarios without predefined questions. Instead, there is room for you to create your own questions, allowing students to write their responses accordingly.

EXTRA Blank Sheets are provided without any predefined scenarios or questions, allowing you the flexibility to generate your own scenarios and questions as needed.

All worksheets are available in both print and digital formats.

*******************************

Task Cards come in the following variations as well:

  • 44 COLORED with Questions
  • 44 COLORED without Questions
  • 44 B&W with Questions
  • 44 B&W without Questions

The Scenario Task Cards are versatile and can be integrated into various instructional settings. They can serve as components of a larger lesson, be utilized in guided small groups, facilitate whole-class discussions, encourage partner discussions before sharing with the larger group or class, or even be used in one-on-one sessions with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian!

*******************************

How/When To Use the Teacher Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: Students can work together in pairs or groups to enact a range of scenarios and showcase appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also illustrate improper skill usage, inviting the 'audience' to assist in reenacting them properly. Ultimately, this activity can enhance confidence, communication, assertiveness, and social skills.

Feelings and Emotions Check In Mat for Primary | No prep Printable |

By Elena Tenisi

Some students on my caseload are very quiet; either because they are shy, afraid, or simply don’t know what to share. Oftentimes, it can be difficult for them to open up so I created a worksheet that allows them to decide what they feel comfortable talking about.

Because the worksheet can also serve as a coloring page, most students tend to feel comfortable in deciding their topic of conversation. Students simply color in the heart with the subject they’d like to address.

This worksheet works well for 1:1 counseling sessions or for teachers who notice a student having a hard time. Simply pull them to the side, or place the worksheet on their desk and have them bring it to you when they are ready.

A HUGE thank you to the following content creators for making my resource possible:

Social Awareness SEL Lesson Using "They're Made Out of Meat" by Terry Bisson

By Ms. J's ELA

This social emotional learning lesson uses Terry Bisson's short story They're Made Out of Meat. During this SEL lesson, students complete a pre-reading activity, read the short story (not included), answer questions related to the text, and contemplate the ways that they can demonstrate social awareness. In particular, this lesson focuses on the idea of excluding others. Students are asked to think about the reasons they exclude others and what they might be missing by excluding people. There is also an opportunity for whole class discussion regarding the idea of social awareness.

This lesson also focuses on short paragraph writing. The presentation contains an outline and example of a 6 sentence response. Students will first collect evidence to support a response about the identity of the short story's speakers. Then, they will practice writing the 6 sentence paragraph supporting their claim about the identity of the speakers.

This resource includes:

- a slides presentation to follow: 6 sentence paragraph outline and example, discussion questions

- 5 worksheets: pre-reading, an activity to help students determine the identity of the story's speakers, questions about social awareness in the text, and a reflection about themselves to increase self-awareness

- a teaching guide

Winter Social Emotional Activities: Social Problem Solving Scenarios

By The Responsive Educator

Mix up your winter festivities with our Winter Social Problem Solving Activity, crafted to nurture social and emotional growth in your students.

Swap out the regular winter routine with these engaging social problem-solving scenarios. They're the perfect way to blend social-emotional learning into your winter activities, making it not just chilly but also full of valuable lessons.

CASEL 5 Social-Emotional Competencies: Our scenarios are thoughtfully crafted to spark discussions around the CASEL 5 social-emotional competencies – Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making.

What's Included

  • 3 social problem-solving worksheets, each with 5 different Winter-related social situations
  • both color and black and white versions

How it Works

  1. Decide if you want students to work independently, with a partner, or in groups. Or have students work alone and then share answers in a class discussion.
  2. Students read each situation, deciding whether the child in the scenario made a good or poor choice. This process encourages critical thinking and reflection on social behaviors.
  3. For good choices, students explain why the decision was positive. For poor choices, students propose alternative ways to handle the situation, sparking meaningful discussions around social skills and empathy.

Sample Winter Scenarios

  • Ethan's Helpful Gesture: Ethan offers to help a classmate who is having a hard time with the zipper on their winter coat.

  • Christopher's Rule-Breaking Proposal: The school rule is that snowball fights are not allowed. Christopher tries to convince his friends to have one anyway, saying that it will be fun.

  • Micah's Neighborly Help: Micah sees his older neighbor outside shoveling snow. He bundles up and goes outside to ask if the man would like some help.
