Glimmers, which are the opposite of triggers are those moments of pure joy and serenity that light up their lives. I use the materials to share and practice glimmers with my students & after just 3 days back the kids have already started using the term "glimmer" when something brings them joy!

The word Glimmers originates from Deb Dana, LCSW, psychotherapist, and author who coined the term. Glimmers which is the opposite of a trigger are those fleeting instances that bring us warmth and peace, offering a profound positive impact on our mental health. From the perspective of our students, understanding and interacting with us can be quite challenging, if not downright frustrating! Some students on my caseload are very quiet; either because they are shy, afraid, or simply don’t know what to share. Oftentimes, it can be difficult for them to open up so I created a worksheet that allows them to decide what they feel comfortable talking about. 

Because the worksheet can also serve as a coloring page, most students tend to feel comfortable in deciding their topic of conversation. Students simply color in the heart with the subject they’d like to address. 

This worksheet works well for 1:1 counseling sessions or for teachers who notice a student having a hard time. Simply pull them to the side, or place the worksheet on their desk and have them bring it to you when they are ready.

This product includes 1 social story that focuses on being friendly. Vocabulary that is reviewed and discussed in depth include friendly, sympathy, and empathy.

Students will learn about how being friendly is important, why you should be friendly towards others, when you are friendly you are nice, caring, etc., the difference between sympathy and empathy and how they relate with being friendly.

One social story that focuses on being friendly is included in this product. The social story includes comprehension questions throughout. Some of the questions require students to put their feet in the shoes of the characters. This product shares with students the importance of being friendly, accepting others for who they are, giving people a chance, communicating with others, and when you should show empathy to others.

This social emotional learning lesson uses Terry Bisson's short story They're Made Out of Meat. During this SEL lesson, students complete a pre-reading activity, read the short story (not included), answer questions related to the text, and contemplate the ways that they can demonstrate social awareness. In particular, this lesson focuses on the idea of excluding others. Students are asked to think about the reasons they exclude others and what they might be missing by excluding people. There is also an opportunity for whole class discussion regarding the idea of social awareness.

This lesson also focuses on short paragraph writing. The presentation contains an outline and example of a 6 sentence response. Students will first collect evidence to support a response about the identity of the short story's speakers. Then, they will practice writing the 6 sentence paragraph supporting their claim about the identity of the speakers.

This resource includes:

- a slides presentation to follow: 6 sentence paragraph outline and example, discussion questions

- 5 worksheets: pre-reading, an activity to help students determine the identity of the story's speakers, questions about social awareness in the text, and a reflection about themselves to increase self-awareness

• Micah's Neighborly Help: Micah sees his older neighbor outside shoveling snow. He bundles up and goes outside to ask if the man would like some help.
