This poster is intended to lay the groundwork for a very basic understanding of how Decimals work, without relying on a comparison to Fractions or Percentages at the very first hurdle. We think that a student should understand the principles of decimals in relation to numbers which are a power of 10, before comparing and contrasting them with Fractions and Percentages. This way, an understanding of fraction conversion can become even stronger later down the line. Download the FREE poster right away, give us a rating, and follow us to stay updated with all forthcoming products! We appreciate your time. This is a simple project, but it adds in real life scenario of what the cost is going out to eat. Students end up shocked at the cost of going out to eat! The students pick out a restaurant of their choice (can download the menu offline), "go out to eat" with three other family members, order, determine cost, sales tax and tip for a total of going out to eat for 4 people. This could be a group project with four students going out to eat and seeing what the cost is for each. Either way, it shows their decimal skills with basic math operations and gives them a new appreciation of going out to eat!

Non-curricular BTC Task: Estimating the size of Rational and Irrational Numbers
By MsVisualizer
This is a fun non curricular thinking task that goes beyond just asking students to convert rational numbers to other forms and put them in order. It provides students with an opportunity to think more deeply about the relative sizes of rational and irrational numbers and strategically choose which shapes to place where.
There are many valid approaches and answers to this task so it is a great way to start the year and build a thinking classroom.
This includes both a version made for 5th, 6th, or 7th grade with mixed numbers and decimal side lengths as well as a version for 8th/9th grade which includes square roots as well.

Fractions, Decimals & Percentages Clip Cards
By LittleStreams
These clip cards are a great way to test students’ knowledge of recognising fractions decimals and percentages using a physical multiple choice system. The given possible answers have been carefully chosen to allow teachers to spot any misconceptions students may have about fractions and their equivalence to decimals and percentages. The idea of this activity is that students clip a clothespin/peg or a paperclip to what they think is the correct answer. This activity works equally well when the cards are laminated. Students simply circle the correct answer using a dry erase marker. Alternatively, you can print these on paper, hand out to your class at the end of the lesson, so they can put their names on and circle the correct answer, serving as a great exit ticket/plenary to the lesson. These cards are in colour, but print equally well in grey scale for cost savings. To make them self marking, simply place a dot on the underside of the card pertaining to the correct answer.
Fraction, Decimal and Percentage Matching Activity
By LittleStreams
This fraction, decimal and percentage matching puzzle is a fun way to test students ability convert between fractions, decimals and percentages. It contains 32 puzzles including all base fractions up to nine-tenths, and also includes a bonus ten-tenths to test understanding of a whole.
It is designed to be easily cut with little wastage. So either the teacher or tutor can prepare the cards by cutting them before hand, or students can cut their own cards, giving them a chance to see the solutions before they attempt the puzzle.
Although this product is made in colour, it prints perfectly well in black and white. Each puzzle is the size of an A4 sheet or US letter. To use less paper, select the pages per sheet option, and the puzzles will be smaller, but still high quality.

Percentage of Amounts, increase and decrease Follow Me Cards
By LittleStreams
These 30 follow me cards are a great way to revise percentage of amounts including increasing and decreasing a number by a given percent. Play is similar to dominoes, where the cards are placed end to end with the question to the answers, but each question only has one answer.
Students connect the questions and answers together forming a chain, with questions steadily getting harder. For extra challenge, don’t use a calculator.
Some ideas for how to use follow me cards:
-Have students race to connect the cards.
-Have a treasure hunt, around the classroom or outside. Students start with the starter card and record the solutions in the table.
-Students each take ownership of a card, and then get themselves in line correctly with the answers. If there are more than 30 students, assign some students as ‘managers’. If there are less than 30 students, the first students to connect their cards can be given the remaining cards.
- Cut each card in half and give the students a matching activity. They can then glue the answers into their books.
