Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson Socratic Seminar Assessment + Rubric
By The Red-Haired Reader
Are you looking for an authentic, student-led final assessment for Brown Girl Dreaming? This resource contains everything you need to hold a Socratic Seminar Fishbowl Discussion in your classroom for the text
Included are two different packets of Socratic Seminar packets- packet A and packet B. Each packet contains three different discussion questions that require students to answer and provide two quotes from the text to back up their answers. Students are also required to come up with three additional questions they will ask if there’s time in their seminar. Finally, the packet has a page where each student will monitor a partner in the opposite circle. They will make a check each time their partner speaks, and paraphrase meaningful comments their partner makes. The file also contains a rubric for you to use while your students are discussing!
When you print out the file, you’ll see packet A on the top half of the sheet, packet B on the bottom half, and then the rubric as the last page of the file. Remove the rubric and print one out for each of your students. Copy the rest of the pages, cut them in half, and staple them. Each student will receive one half-sheet booklet; packet A or packet B.
Give your students adequate time to plan for their Seminar! I usually give them a full class period (40 minutes for me), but you could have them do it for homework, or over the course of a few days. The day of the Seminar, you’ll assign partners with opposite packets. Let A discuss for as long as they need (usually 25 -30-ish minutes for me!), then flip-flop your circles and have B discuss afterwards.
My students LOVE Socratic Seminars! I have found the fishbowl discussion format works much better when you give each group three different questions so you don’t hear the same discussion two times, which is how this product is set up. I have used Socratic Seminars in small literature circle groups, as well as with the whole class at once. Please ask if you have questions!
Please help my little business grow!

Now with digital worksheet to support distance learning!
This product features an engaging "Poetry Talk" activity that will have your students thinking, writing, speaking, and moving on the first day of your poetry unit. In this activity, they must choose between 6 different quotes about poetry from famous authors like T. S. Eliot and Carl Sandburg and articulate why the quote aligns with their perspective on poetry. This is a great way for students to think independently about poetry, share their ideas with others, and to give you a sense of where your students stand on the subject of poetry! We have also recently added a digital version of the History Talk worksheet to support distance learning and cut down on paper.

The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe Figurative Language station annotation activity
By The Red-Haired Reader
This activity requires the students to rotate to 6 stations in order to annotate their copy of "The Raven". The first page in the document is directions for you to project on the smartboard so the students can read the directions. The next 6 pages are the copies you will put at each station. Each one lists a type of figurative language the students need to look for, a definition of the figurative language, an example from literature, and an explanation of the example. If the students can't find examples in the text based on that information, there is a hint at the bottom of each station's directions that gives them specific stanzas to look in. The last page of the document is a key for the teacher to use to guide the students as they work. The figurative language stations include simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration, and imagery. Answer key included!!!

Two Kinds by Amy Tan and Push poem: dual text analysis
By The Red-Haired Reader
This document asks students to make a Text-to-Text connection between "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan which appears in the 7th grade Pearson anthology my school uses and the poem "Push" by Marty Schoenleber. The two pieces are perfect for a dual-text-analysis.
The document begins with questions about "Two Kinds". It moves on to the full text of the poem, and asks students to apply the ideas expressed in the poem to the characters in "Two Kinds". Finally, students will complete a paragraph response synthesis question.
I have provided the full text of the poem, but you can also watch the poet performing his piece "spoken word style" at https://www.youtube.com/watchv=POKvyjfI22Q . My students thoroughly enjoyed watching the poet perform his work, and I think it really brought more meaning to the Amy Tan piece.
This digital resource is perfect for Distance Learning. Students can view the questions and poem on the PDF, then answer the questions and complete the synthesis writing assignment in a Google Doc or however you have students submit their work digitally!

Shakespeare Valentine's Day Lesson Plan
By Language Arts Excellence
Any teacher of middle or high school students knows that emotions tend to run wild on Valentine's Day, and instead of fighting it, this lesson on Shakespearean language will help you to take advantage of the birds and the bees buzzing around in your classroom!
This full-length lesson plan revolves around Shakespeare's mastery of the English language with an emphasis on his knack for coming up with the most compassionate of compliments and scathing of insults. Through a non-intimidating approach, students will have the opportunity to do a little bit of acting and make connections to modern day as they explore Shakespeare's language of love and hate. I am always astounded by the level of maturity of the discussion that arises from this activity as students discuss what makes a compliment or insult particularly effective and from whom it means the most. This is sure to be a lesson that you will use again and again on February 14th.
Product includes:
Though this product is ideal for use on Valentine's Day, it really can be used all year long. I tend to save it for the day prior to school vacation. I hope that your students get a kick out of indulging in their heightened emotions for this lesson.
