This activity requires the students to rotate to 6 stations in order to annotate their copy of "The Raven". The first page in the document is directions for you to project on the smartboard so the students can read the directions. The next 6 pages are the copies you will put at each station. Each one lists a type of figurative language the students need to look for, a definition of the figurative language, an example from literature, and an explanation of the example. If the students can't find examples in the text based on that information, there is a hint at the bottom of each station's directions that gives them specific stanzas to look in. The last page of the document is a key for the teacher to use to guide the students as they work. The figurative language stations include simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration, and imagery. Answer key included!!!

This document asks students to make a Text-to-Text connection between "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan which appears in the 7th grade Pearson anthology my school uses and the poem "Push" by Marty Schoenleber. The two pieces are perfect for a dual-text-analysis.

The document begins with questions about "Two Kinds". It moves on to the full text of the poem, and asks students to apply the ideas expressed in the poem to the characters in "Two Kinds". Finally, students will complete a paragraph response synthesis question.

I have provided the full text of the poem, but you can also watch the poet performing his piece "spoken word style" at https://www.youtube.com/watchv=POKvyjfI22Q . My students thoroughly enjoyed watching the poet perform his work, and I think it really brought more meaning to the Amy Tan piece.

This digital resource is perfect for Distance Learning. Students can view the questions and poem on the PDF, then answer the questions and complete the synthesis writing assignment in a Google Doc or however you have students submit their work digitally!

I find that putting it into terms of music often with popular songs makes the process more enjoyable for them and myself. The following activity walks students through making text-to-text connections between what Cassie experiences on her trip to Strawberry in chapter 5 of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and the real life story of Emmet Till. Students begin by reading an article and viewing a 5-minute video about Emmet Till. Then they answer text-based questions that require them to think about the experiences of both Cassie and Emmet. They will compare the expectations and actual experiences of both individuals, respond to quotes from the movie and text, and explain why the behavior of both children was viewed as "offensive". Finally, they will read and annotate the poem "Emmet Till" by James Emanuel, answering questions about the tone, word choice, and figurative language. Students could work on this independently, with a partner, or in a small group.
