Word Meaning with Nonsense Words

Why teach word meaning through nonsense words (context clues only)?

• Students must use critical thinking to solve
• Students must read the whole passage for context clues
• Students must problem solve to find the best word that makes the most sense.
• They can't find the answer except through problem solving.

All of these are things we want every student to do! This is something that is already adapted for high and low learners.

Starting with three nonsense words gets students going so they can work in groups or independently to decode the meaning of 7 REAL words (selected from the SAT vocabulary list).

This is a perfect activity for group problem solving and critical thinking!

The bundle focuses on key areas and figures from Ancient Egypt. Great for class work, distance learning and home schooling. The bundle contains five close reading activities, a timeline display or sorting activity, two biography writing units about Cleopatra and Tutankhamun, an informational text writing unit about Ancient Egypt, and a discussion based writing activity about who was the greatest Egyptian leader. The activities are perfect for students in 3rd grade or 4th grade.

Firstly, there are five close reading activities, or informational texts, about:

• An Overview of Ancient Egypt
• Cleopatra
• Tutankhamun
• Ramesses II

These activities require NO PREP and have a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity for those fast finishers. Answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of each document.

Secondly, there are two biography writing units about Cleopatra and Tutankhamun. The units have been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Then, there is a great classroom display and sorting activity that is perfect for introducing students to some of the key events of Ancient Egypt. There are 30 posters or task cards that include many of the key events and periods from the period. The posters look great as a display in the classroom and the cards are a brilliant introduction to Ancient Egypt. The displays and cards come both with dates and without dates, so the students can research the dates online before sorting the timeline. The cards look even better when laminated.

Then, there is an informational text writing unit about Ancient Egypt. The unit has also been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Finally, there is a discussion based writing unit discussing who is the greatest leader from Ancient Egypt. The unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Guided Conversations: 

Guided Convos provide a scenario about a familiar topic and an outline for students to use to keep the conversation going.   Students work with a partner and choose the role of Person A or Person B. They can trade roles, trade partners, or even do the same exact conversation again!  They never turn out the same way!  Students report feeling much more confident and able to keep conversations going after practicing a few times! 

These conversations have 2 different versions for Novice High students and 2 different versions for Intermediate Low students. 

Integrated Listening & Speaking: 

ILS activities are done alone.  Students will listen to a recording, and be given instructions for how to respond.  They might hear: “Tell me about….” Or “Ask me questions about…” .  These activities mimic the speaking/listening portion of many popular Seal of Biliteracy Tests.  

There is a pre-made student activity that requires no language lab!  If you have a language lab or some other kind of recording software, the teacher script will allow you to record the audio for students if you desire.

There are 2 activities in this resource, each with 5 prompts.  They are designed so that the first activity is a bit easier and the 2nd one  a bit more challenging.  Use with different levels or at the beginning and end of a unit! 

✍️Scenario Task Cards:

Scenario Task Cards are my go-to for lots of things!  I display one at the beginning of every class and ask students to take turns talking about the scenario.   But I also use them as a lesson plan for a class activity!  I have students change partners and have them tell a story about 5 times in a row, each time with a new scenario and a new partner.  Then students switch roles.  Listeners become the speakers.  Finally, sometimes I print the scenarios and ask students to write about them in class or for homework!

In cognitive behavioral therapy, there are dozens of thinking errors that cause the mind to believe things that are just not true. Empower students to escape negative thinking by guiding them to reframe negative, faulty thoughts to positive thoughts. These engaging, highly relevant scenarios can provide students the opportunity to practice reframing their thinking in difficult situations that they experience everyday! These scenarios can aide students in taking notice of their thoughts in certain situations, step back and view the “bigger” picture, and decide how to act based on that more realistic perspective.

The Task Cards include highly relevant scenarios that students can relate to followed by the question multi-part question: “What negative thoughts can arise from this situation and how can you reframe those thoughts to positive ones?” You can use the B&W Task Cards to print out on ANY color paper!

• Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.
• Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.
• Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses: How would you respond in this situation? How can you reframe negative thinking to positive thinking and maintain a positive mindset? Students can swap papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/situations.
• Discussion: Students can discuss the Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class.

Firstly, there are six reading comprehension activities, or informational texts, about:

• An Overview of the Aztec Empire
• Key Advancements of the Aztecs
• Emperor Itzcoatl
• Moctezuma II
• Hernan Cortes
• Religion in the Aztec Empire

These activities require NO PREP and have a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity, a crossword and a wordsearch for those fast finishers. Answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of each document.

Then, there are two biography writing units about Moctezuma II and Hernan Cortes. The units have been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Then, there is an informational writing unit about the Aztec Empire. The unit has again been split into three or four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Also, there is an opinion writing unit about who was the most influential person from the Aztec era: Itzcoatl, Moctezuma II or Hernan Cortes. This unit has again been split into three or four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Finally, there is an Aztec Empire Timeline Activity and Display. It is perfect for introducing students to the some of the key events and people of Aztec era. There are 25 posters or task cards that include many of the key events from the period.
