AVID Vocabulary Game for SAT and ACT | Fishbowl Rounds: Help your students prepare for the SAT or ACT while building their vocabulary skills. During Fishbowl Rounds students have 60 seconds to spend in each of the 3 rounds where they have to use the vocabulary words in different ways!

Directions

• Students have 60 seconds per round!

1 Clues

• Whoever is drawing cards may only use word clues to help their team guess the word. You may not use physical or actions and you cannot use the word in your clues.

2 dictionary

• Whoever is drawing cards must draw a picture to get the team to guess the word. You may not write words or use sounds or noises; it must be silent.

3 three words

• Whoever is drawing cards must use only THREE words to get the team to guess. These words can be repeated, can be said in different volumes or rates but must be only three words.

What's Included:

Directions for the Card Game:

• This game was inspired by the game TABOO

1. Students are put into small groups with an even number of players.
2. Each group is split into 2 teams.
3. The clue giver will start a 1 minute timer and turn over a card so nobody can see. (colors don' matter)
4. The clue giver now says words (not sounds or gestures) to get their team to guess the word at the top of the card.
5. The clue giver cannot say any of the words (or forms of the words) listed on the card. Formations include: abbreviations, tenses (past, present, future), initials, spelling, letters, sounds like, rhyming, smaller version words, compound words.

6. Teammates can guess as many words as possible before the timer runs out.
7. The clue giver may pass on a word and place it in a discard pile.
8. If the clue giver uses an illegal word, the opposing team who is monitoring, can sound a buzzer or shout the word "AVID." Then the clue giver must place the card in the discard pile and try a new word.
9. When the timer is done the team will count up how many points earned based off of how many words were guessed correctly. The opposing team gets one point for each card placed in the discard pile.
10 Switch teams and repeat. The team with the highest points, wins!

Directions:

• Click on the circle to access a forced copy of the vocab log/list.

• They should also have time to study the words before this game.
• Divide the class into 4-6 teams.
• Each team should have a "speaker" to share answers.
• Have each team take turns answering a vocabulary question.
• Teams will only get 100 seconds to answer the question.
• If they can answer correctly, the team gets 1 point.
• Then, give that team a ball (a crumpled up piece of paper will do).
• If the team can make a basket into the trashcan, reward the team an extra point.

This is a one page letter addressed to students to give them reassurance/motivation during the state test or any other high stakes testing. This letter explains to the students how proud you are of them regardless of the results. It goes on to explain to them how the testing only measures how much or what they learned during the school year but emphasizes the positive character traits of them that cannot be measured by a test.
