In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the NASA’s Space Race and the women behind the scenes as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic.    A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students.  The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper.  Also included with this lesson is a word search puzzle which is perfect for early finishers or as a part of the lesson. 

This lesson is intended to be an introduction to the topic and was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well.  This lesson could be used in a history or technology class, as an activity during Black History Month or Women's History Month,  and is also a great lesson to leave for a substitute teacher!

This step-by-step two-day lesson plan encourages students to consider what defines their generation and then create their own lyrics to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire." "Collaborative Story Time" is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique evocative photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.

Get your students excited about coordinates during Black History Month & martin luther king jr Day! These worksheets aim to plot a number of coordinates to find an inspiring message to celebrate some of the most influential African American leaders.

This can help motivate your students to try their best to get the message right by plotting the ordered pairs correctly and accurately.

This resource can be used as an activity, math centers, fast finishers, homework, substitute, "filler days", or end-of-the-year graphing activity! Completed messages will make great bulletin boards for your classroom or hallway.

Figures included:

• Mohamed Ali — "Don't count the days, make the days count."
• Martin Luther King Jr — " The time is always right to do what is right.”
• Malcolm X — "Education is the passport to the future."
• Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — "You can't win if you don't play as a unit."

Directions:

Students will plot letters on a coordinate plane, write each letter above its respective point, and then read the message by following the order of the plotted points from left to right.

A coordinate grid is included with this activity. Only the first quadrant is used therefore it can be used for beginners.

With this resource, you can challenge your class to test their understanding of coordinates to find the hidden message in a fun and meaningful way. So it's a great way of testing their skills.

This is a biography writing unit about the famous American NASA astronaut and first black female person to go into space, Mae Jemison. The unit is ideal for fifth grade and sixth grade and has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning and perfect for students in 5th grade or 6th grade learning about U.S. History, space, or for Black History Month.

The first lesson is interactive and involves students reading facts, and then sorting and ordering these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the children need to use these facts to type four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson they need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions before typing up their conclusion. In the final lesson your class will need to check their draft paragraphs before typing up their work on to the template provided.
