Iroquois & Algonquian Native American Scavenger Hunt (No Prep!)

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that analyzes how Iroquois and Algonquian tribes interacted with the environment and developed unique cultures which is studied in the 4th grade curriculum under the following standards:
4.2 Native American groups, chiefly the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) and Algonquian-speaking groups, inhabited the region that became New York State. Native American Indians interacted with the environment and developed unique cultures.
4.2a Geographic factors often influenced locations of early settlements. People made use of the resources and the lands around them to meet their basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter.
4.2b Native American groups developed specific patterns of organization and governance to manage their societies.
Students will compare and contrast the patterns of organization and governance of Native American groups such as the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) and Lenape, including matrilineal clan structure, decision-making processes, and record keeping, with a focus on local Native American groups.
4.2c Each Native American group developed a unique way of life with a shared set of customs, beliefs, and values.
This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, act as a treasure hunter to find the Moonstone Treasure from the attached fictional Iroquois folklore. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #6. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have successfully found the Moonstone!
This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!
Maya Empire Timeline Display Research and Sorting Activity

A great classroom display and sorting activity that is perfect for introducing students to the some of the key events, legends and famous figures of the Maya Empire of modern-day Central America.
There are 33 posters or task cards that include many of the key events including the development of early Maya settlements, the developments of city states such as Tikal and Palenque, the rule of famous kings, and the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.
The posters look great as a display in the classroom and the cards are a brilliant introduction to the Maya. The displays and cards come both with dates and without dates, so the students can research the dates online before sorting the timeline. The cards look even better when laminated.

Trade Routes Activity--5th Grade Studies Weekly Week 8

Get up and get trading:
Students love getting up and interacting with this trade route activity. This activity supports the study of Indigenous People's trade routes, but can easy represent a variety of civilizations. Students loved having a goal and being able to barter with one another to succeed in that goal.
After completing the activity, students reflect on their experience and make connections to what makes a successful trade route. This helps students take prior knowledge and bridge it to historical learning.
My students loved this activity and had a great time bartering for resources.

Indigenous People's Regional Dwellings Project--5th grade Studies Weekly Week 6

Project with variety:
Teachers will have three different approaches to choose from to complete this project concerning the regional dwellings of Indigenous People of North America. Students will research an assigned region in order to complete a project concerning family dwellings. Directions are provided for models, posters, or Google Slides.
Students will answer questions concerning their research and reach conclusions based on their information. These questions increases rigor.
Students will have an opportunity to present the information gained with their classmates.
Students will use their creativity to create the project.
This project aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standards 5.H.3 and 5.G.7.

Indigenous Trade with Europeans Game (natives/colonists): Studies Weekly Week 16

Flexible and Fun Trading Game:
This flexible and fun trading game will help students better understand the struggles that Indigenous Peoples (Native Americans) had when trading with Europeans (French and British Colonists). The game can be played as a whole group with cards projected onto the board or as small groups with cards printed for each group.
Students take the role of Indigenous traders. Each round they must complete trades which change the resources in their possession. The end of each round has an event which affects what resources they have. Students who run out of resources must move to new territories suffering the consequences of leaving their own land.
Once the entire set of cards have been used, the trade season ends. Students then reflect on their survival and struggles throughout the trade season. They also think more critically about how trades affected the Indigenous populations.
This activity aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standard 5.H.6, 5.E.1, and 5.E.2.

Cooperation and Conflict in Jamestown Project--5th Grade Studies Weekly Week 13

Express a different point of view:
Students approach identifying and explaining the cooperation and conflict of the colonists and the indigenous people in Jamestown in a new way. They begin by presenting the thoughts and actions of the leaders of these two groups in thought bubbles. As an extension, the students evaluate what situations caused conflicts and speculate on how they may have handled the situations if they were present in Jamestown.
This approach requires students to be more creative than simply answering questions. Students can also research to find more in depth answers. This product is aligned with 5th grade Studies Weekly Week 13, American Foundations. However, this can be used as a stand alone assignment.
This product aligns with Indiana Social Studies standard 5.H.6.

Iroquois Confederacy/Articles of Confederation Venn: 5th Studies Weekly Week 23

How did Indigenous Peoples help us with the constitution:
Students will research how the Articles of Confederation, the predecessor of the Constitution, compares with the Iroquois Confederacy. Students will gather information and complete a Venn Diagram concerning this topic.
This activity aligns with 5th Grade Studies Weekly. But, Studies Weekly is not necessary to complete this assignment. A link is suggested for useful information.
Aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standard 5.C.3.
