The scavenger hunt is designed so that students have to revisit and reread the reading passages multiple times when looking for code words. Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Four Corners Figurative Language Activity is a fun whole-group game or review activity. Your students will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. Is reading comprehension getting boring in your Spanish class?  Turn it into a game!  This reading about famous Afro-Latinos goes from dull to exciting as students work together and move around the room to solve a mystery!  This is a simple “print and go” with no work for the teacher!  

   There’s been a robbery at  a famous museum for Afro-Latinos!  The students play the role of the investigator of the museum robbery.  They have to read all 10 parts of the story to get the full picture of what was taken and why the objects are important.  While they read the parts, they are also looking for “code words”.  Students record the code words on a special answer sheet that will eventually lead them to solving the mystery of who stole the important artifacts.  It’s so much fun! 

    After, you can decide which of the 3 follow-up activities you want to do with your students.  There are 3; a True or False Activity to check for basic comprehension, a graphic organizer for students to organize notes about 4 Afro-Latinos, and a writing follow up where students use their reading comprehension and critical thinking to invent an explanation for why the thief stole the items.  Answer key to the True/False is also included.  Best of all?  If there’s something you’d like to change for your students, you are free to edit!
