Coupon Binder -Teach your students or children the power of saving money

By Regina Frazier

Save lots of money while shopping using coupons. This colorful, cheerful binder organizes your coupons and makes it easier for you to find just the right coupon you are looking for while out shopping. Teach your students or children in your household the value of saving money by saving coupons. Create your own coupon binder by using baseball card holders that you can find at many dollar stores or office supply stores. You can either use a two inch or three inch binder to set it up and place all your dividers in. There are two coupon sorting sheets available. Rather than flipping through the pages in your binder to insert coupons which can take a lot of time, you can use the coupon sorting mats. Once the coupons are all sorted, you can then place them in your binder. Children of all ages can help with sorting the coupons. Many kids can also help out with gathering coupons and cutting them out. Have your students write about ways they can help their family save money. There are a couple of writing prompts that you could use to have your students share ways that they can help their families save money. This does not necessarily mean just using coupons. It could mean saving money by turning off the lights when not in use, not taking long showers, or turning in cans for redemption. Some kids might write about a job they do such as a paper route, mowing the grass or shoveling snow. Some students might choose to discuss buying items on sale at the store and not demanding expensive name brand items."Older students can work on the total amount of savings from using coupons. They can also work on figuring out percentages to show how much money is saved during each shopping trip and totals for each month. If you are interested in this product please download to see a few more pictures of what you will get. Child Labor: Compare Industrial Era to Present Day

By Sarah Austin

This lesson involves having students examine the impacts of the Industrial Era in the United States with a specific focus on child labor. It is recommended that students will have explored, to some degree, the Industrial era prior to this lesson. The Slide Presentation is interactive, problem posing, and vicariously draws the students into the lives of the children of the Industrial era.

Optional Extension Activity: Students compare and contrast the child labor of the Industrial era with the child labor that exists today. A 22 minute documentary film titled 'Zoned for Slavery: The Child Behind the Label' supplements this lesson.

This lesson includes:

  • Slide Presentation [59 Slides]
  • Student Guided Notes
  • Venn Diagram Handout

Geography: Developing or Developed? Examining Countries' Development

By Geography & Math Made Easy

How can you tell if a country is considered developed or developing? What are the characteristics or socioeconomic indicators of a country that you look at to determine if they are developed or developing?

This is a high-level thinking skill lesson that requires students to be actively involved in their learning experience. This lesson discusses what determines whether a country is developed or developing. Students will work in groups to create graphs depicting socioeconomic indicators--such as life expectancy, literacy rate, annual income, available technology, and medicine,--for various countries. Students will analyze the graphs to determine if each researched country is considered developed or developing and why. This not only encourages students to think outside the box but also reintegrates basic graph reading skills needed for state testing. Students are actively involved in every aspect of this lesson.
