Coupon Binder -Teach your students or children the power of saving money

By Regina Frazier

Save lots of money while shopping using coupons. This colorful, cheerful binder organizes your coupons and makes it easier for you to find just the right coupon you are looking for while out shopping. Teach your students or children in your household the value of saving money by saving coupons. Create your own coupon binder by using baseball card holders that you can find at many dollar stores or office supply stores. You can either use a two inch or three inch binder to set it up and place all your dividers in. There are two coupon sorting sheets available. Rather than flipping through the pages in your binder to insert coupons which can take a lot of time, you can use the coupon sorting mats. Once the coupons are all sorted, you can then place them in your binder. Children of all ages can help with sorting the coupons. Many kids can also help out with gathering coupons and cutting them out. Have your students write about ways they can help their family save money. There are a couple of writing prompts that you could use to have your students share ways that they can help their families save money. This does not necessarily mean just using coupons. It could mean saving money by turning off the lights when not in use, not taking long showers, or turning in cans for redemption. Some kids might write about a job they do such as a paper route, mowing the grass or shoveling snow. Some students might choose to discuss buying items on sale at the store and not demanding expensive name brand items."Older students can work on the total amount of savings from using coupons. They can also work on figuring out percentages to show how much money is saved during each shopping trip and totals for each month. Geography summer school and camps don't give us enough time to cover all the concepts and topics that need to be covered. Squeezing the curriculum

8 months is difficult; covering it over 6-8 weeks is impossible. There is so much information and so little time. This leaves us as educators with the question of what are the important aspects to cover. Having taught middle school level and high school level geography for 11 years, I have pulled out what I feel is a must!

A working knowledge of geography concepts is helpful in teaching this material. If you do not understand geography or if you have never taught geography before, no problem! Simply, read through the student material so you can help your students understand and complete the included activities. Before presenting it to your students, this will require a little mental preparation; however, this resource will save you 20+ hours of resource prep.

Child Labor: Compare Industrial Era to Present Day

By Sarah Austin

This lesson involves having students examine the impacts of the Industrial Era in the United States with a specific focus on child labor. It is recommended that students will have explored, to some degree, the Industrial era prior to this lesson. This resource will prompt students to analyze social activist Lewis Hines' photographs that depict the various jobs and working conditions that children experienced. The Slide Presentation is interactive, problem posing, and vicariously draws the students into the lives of the children of the Industrial era.

Optional Extension Activity: Students compare and contrast the child labor of the Industrial era with the child labor that exists today. A 22 minute documentary film titled 'Zoned for Slavery: The Child Behind the Label' supplements this lesson.

This lesson includes:

  • Slide Presentation [59 Slides]
  • Student Guided Notes
  • Venn Diagram Handout
