This is a comprehensive lesson on the reasons for migration and how push and pull factors play a part in the process. Students will watch a PowerPoint on Migration and participate in a group reading activity. As a group students will explore a time in history when people migrated based on economic, social, political, environmental, and demographic reasons based on Ravenstein’s 7 Laws of Migration.

OBJECTIVES:

• The learner will understand how and why people migrate internally and internationally.
• The learner will examine migration throughout history, examining the push and pull factors of migration.

This lesson involves having students examine the impacts of the Industrial Era in the United States with a specific focus on child labor. It is recommended that students will have explored, to some degree, the Industrial era prior to this lesson. Students often can/will recite the basics of SOME of the Bill of Rights but often do not know how they apply to their personal life. They believe that it was written years ago and does not have any relevant meaning to the HERE and NOW. With this interactive activity, my US History and Government classes dived into the Bill of Rights and learned how to apply each of the Amendments to their personal life. This brought about outstanding debates in class (and online) about civil rights and liberties.

This was created as a PDF document to use in the classroom. There is also a Digital Learning Format where it can be assigned to students to complete in a virtual setting such as Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.
