Shakespeare's Epitaph Assignment

Students get the chance to create the epitaph for the gravestone of the most revered writer of all time. The activity encourages students to be thoughtful with their knowledge of William Shakespeare but also to be creative with their inscriptions. This can be done in or outside of class and also works as a great emergency substitute plan as no preparation is needed for this activity besides printing off the templates. To be festive, I love to give this assignment on the anniversary of Shakespeare's actual death, April 23, but with the subject at hand, it also works well as a Halloween lesson plan.

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! This well-organized activity allows students to effortlessly become poets, while thinking about concise and precise word choice, counting syllables to create rhythm, getting exposure to high-quality examples, and learning something new! STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE
After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")
*As an optional follow-up activity, use my No-Prep Figurative Language Short Passage Set resource to assess individual understanding, homework, or assessment!
REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. Writing a fairy tale can be a fun and interesting project for your students. This product provides students with the opportunity to use creativity while writing their fairy tale and share it with their peers!
This product includes information to share with your students about what a fairy tale is, why do we write a fairy tale, challenges characters may face in fairy tales, who could be your audience when writing a fairy tale, rules to follow when writing a fairy tale, possible options students can choose to publish their fable, using a strong opening compared to a weak opening in the first paragraph of your fairy tale, tips that are useful to write a great fairy tale, a layout of the fairy tale is provided, an example of a fairy tale is included in this product that includes an idea template, planning the fairy tale with more in depth ideas, and an example of a fairy tale rough draft is included in this product.
After the example is read, students can answer 6 comprehension questions about the fairy tale. Students will are also provided with a template that includes an area for 3 fairy tale ideas, and once they choose their fairy tale, they can add onto their fairy tale using the idea chart. Templates are included after the example along with a rough draft template and reminder checklist so students remember to go back and check their work once it is completed.

Writing a play is a perfect project that gives students time to write about an event that happened in their life or an event that they made up. Once they are finished, they can share it with different groups of people and have their friends play each character. This packet includes information to share with your students about what a play is, what steps to follow when writing the beginning, middle and end of a play, why we write a play, who we write a play for, and tips to look for when rereading and editing. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to write with a play using a graphic organizer and an example of a play. On the last several pages, two templates are included to help students write the rough draft and final draft of their play that includes space for characters, props, act, scenes, and lines to show what their characters are saying.

Writing an informational essay is an important writing project that gives students time to conduct research on a specific topic that is of interest to them. Once they are finished with their masterpiece, they can share it with their friends and family members. This product includes information to share with your students about what informational writing is, why we complete informational writing tasks, what steps to follow when writing the introduction/lead topic sentence, subtopics #1, #2, and #3, and the conclusion to form a strong essay on a topic, how to make our writing flow so that it makes sense to the reader, and tips to look for when rereading and editing. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to complete an informational essay. Using this guide, students will write and complete a simple or complex informational essay.
