This is a fun and musical way to discuss a tough subject on plate boundaries around the African Rift Valley. It sits along a divergent boundary where the Somali Plate and African Plate are drifting apart. In millions of years, this could cause not only East Africa to become a new small continent, but would create a new ocean.

This lesson incorporates music as a learning tool. Students will enjoy the new rendition of the song Breaking Up is Hard to Do. It is a love song from West Africa to the East African Rift Valley. An MP3 of the song is included in this lesson.

OBJECTIVES:

1. The learner will listen to and analyze the song.
2. The learner will understand how physical processes shape patterns in the physical environment specific to tectonic forces.
3. The learner will describe different landforms such as trenches and lakes near Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the physical processes that cause their development.

This rubric looks at 5 different areas when students are being assessed on writing a research report. The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: Choosing someone to write about, grammar/punctuation/spelling, final draft includes details of person's life, staying on task, and sharing the biography with peers. This rubric scores writing a biography out of 10 possible points. The rating scale use is a 2, 1, & 0.

Studies have shown that when accountable talk is used in the classroom, students not only gain a deeper grasp of the material but also experience a greater sense of community. Students will show what they know about time, elapsed time, measurement in inches, volume, mass, bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots. Each bar graph, pictograph, and line plot has questions for students to interpret the data on the graph. Students will use the ruler to measure items to the nearest quarter inch. Students will looks at clocks and tell the time, then use given times to figure out the elapsed time. They will also use their best judgement on mass and volume measurements. This assessment covers 3rd grade MD.1, MD.2, MD.3, and MD.4. This assessment can be used as a pre/post test for the measurement and data standard for 3rd grade

This assessment comes with a standards based rubric. This is on a scale of 1-4 and each question is tied to a specific standard.

This rubric looks at 6 different areas when students are being assessed on writing a personal narrative. The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: the order of events when writing a personal narrative, grabbing the reader's attention in the beginning of the narrative, the ending, staying on task, grammar/punctuation/spelling, and working with others. This rubric scores the personal narrative writing assignment out of 18 possible points. The rating scale use is a 3, 2, 1, & 0.

Relating Multiplication to Division quiz is for the 3rd grade curriculum. This quiz covers core standards OA.1, OA.2, OA.4, and OA.6. This quiz focuses on solving word problems and showing their work. They will solve both multiplication and division word problems and also relate how the multiplication problem correlates to a division problem.
