This is a fun and musical way to discuss a tough subject on plate boundaries around the African Rift Valley. It sits along a divergent boundary where the Somali Plate and African Plate are drifting apart. In millions of years, this could cause not only East Africa to become a new small continent, but would create a new ocean.

This lesson incorporates music as a learning tool. Students will enjoy the new rendition of the song Breaking Up is Hard to Do. It is a love song from West Africa to the East African Rift Valley. An MP3 of the song is included in this lesson.

OBJECTIVES:

1. The learner will listen to and analyze the song.
2. The learner will understand how physical processes shape patterns in the physical environment specific to tectonic forces.
3. The learner will describe different landforms such as trenches and lakes near Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the physical processes that cause their development.

Students are more likely to work towards higher levels of achievement when they have access to assessment tools used to evaluate their work. These three student-friendly 2-Point Short Response Rubrics consist of language that students are familiar with and can easily understand. These Rubrics enhance students' understanding of how their work will be evaluated. At the bottom of the rubric, there is a "Scorer" section where the teacher/scorer can provide comments and feedback on students' writing responses. This is an excellent tool for lower level, Special Ed, and ELL students.

These Rubrics can be used for peer evaluation. Students can use these "easy to follow" rubrics to evaluate the work of their peers and provide comments and feedback.

Looking for a figurative language activity for William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet? This resource invites students to identify various types of figurative language found in Romeo and Juliet. The resource features a glossary with definitions of 7 types of figurative language as well as examples of how they're used in passages from the play. The resource also includes a three-page quiz in which students have to identify the type of figurative language used in each of 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. For teachers, the resource features an answer key that will enable you to grade students' quizzes quickly and efficiently.

I created this rubric to help my middle students know what is expected of them when completing a journal writing prompt for a personal narrative. Often times, my students take advantage of free writing and do not think of it as a "real grade." This is a google slideshow that I use to help students (and their parents) understand my expectations on an MYP Criterion D Assessment.

I use multiple specific examples to show what it means to

• Describe vs. Explain the level of accuracy
• Determine if the answer makes sense in the context

After teaching 6th grade math in a few years, I've learned that students often don't know what it means to "explain the accuracy" of their answer or to determine if it makes sense in the context of the problem. This is designed to help clarify the expectations that they will see throughout MYP.

I do this after our first Criterion D quiz. All examples are from the quiz.
