Within the presentation are links to reading, writing, speaking and listening activities.  This activity is great for a travel theme and when students are starting to learn the past tense! Avila is a similar format to Vacaciones en España. The Google Slides™ presentation contains original photographs from Ávila, Spain, a beautiful and medieval city to the north of Madrid. Each slide contains text taking students through Ávila’s past (its incredible walls, towers and cathedral) and present-day life with some views of the city!  The text is mainly written in both present and past (preterite and imperfect) and therefore is great for Years 2, 3 and 4. The Escape Room is a student favorite! It comes in a Spanish and English version, and students must follow the clues to help solve a crime.  The clues take them all around Spain where they will learn about various aspects of the culture.  Each clue they solve reveals the next clue! When we unexpectedly went to distance learning, I had to scramble as an AP Spanish® teacher. My students did not have access to their textbooks or the audio that went with it.  We used the Temas text, but I found that I had to adapt.  So, my lesson plans are now based almost entirely on authentic materials that I have found and curated.  I have created vocab lists around these materials and the activities that will go with them!  There are times during the lesson plans where I offer a suggestion from something that is found in the Temas textbook, but these lessons can be used fully without those suggestions.

Along with the honor of teaching our most advanced Spanish students comes the burden of heavy correcting and tons of planning.  We also have other preps.  Having an entire year’s worth of curriculum, lesson plans, projects and assessments ready to go will save you an incredible amount of time and relieve some of the pressure that we face as teachers. 

In my classes, we also review grammar and use the Avance text as a guide.  I include a study guide and a grammar quiz in each unit, but the practice activities (if you want to review grammar in class) are not included.

We use the textbook TEMAS at my school site but the readings can be very dry. I like how this unit incorporates soooo many resources that are authentic.

AP Spanish Language and Culture® Unit 5 explores the factors that influence quality of life. Making reading comprehension for fun and interesting! Explore a trending vacation method by reading about Ecotourism! The article and follow up activities are provided and can be assigned digitally or in print form.

First, students will read a blog post about ecotourism in Panama. While they read, students will take notes on the important bullet points they read about. Next, students will write 6 comprehension questions on a separate page. Finally, they will write the answers to their questions on the same page where they took their notes. Either later in class or the next day, students will exchange their questions. Each student will answer the comprehension questions that another student wrote. This kind of activity leads to students paying more attention to detail in their reading and also in their question writing!

How can I use this product?

• One reading; 2 activities! I love when I can take one source and use it in more than one way!
• Students read and take their own notes about what's important in the article

• The second activity is answering another student's comprehension questions
• Take it one step further: have students correct their classmates answers with their pre-made answer key! Have them work in pairs or small groups to clear up any confusions and ensure good comprehension.
• Ask students to add new information to their "sources chart" for this unit so they may refer to it for an upcoming assessment

Do your AP Spanish students need more practice reading charts and graphs? The AP-style multiple choice questions can be tricky! These Google docs contain 2 graphs and accompanying comprehension questions that can be assigned in Google Classroom (or other learning management platform) for distance learners, or can be printed in color or in black and white for students who are in person.
