Celebrate Earth Day with a Heartfelt Craft!

This Earth Day craft is a fun and interactive way for kindergartener and first-grader students to show their love for our planet!

Materials:

• Construction paper (various colors)
• Scissors
• Glue
• Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

Instructions:

1. Print the worksheet: The worksheet features 10 heart-shaped prompts with Earth Day themes.
2. Cut out the hearts: Help younger students cut out the hearts or let older children practice their scissor skills independently.
3. Brainstorm and decorate: Guide students in brainstorming answers to the prompts on the hearts. These can be simple phrases or sentences like "I love the Earth because..." or "I can use less trash by..." Encourage creativity with colorful markers, crayons, or pencils.
4. Create a class display: Once decorated, glue the hearts onto a large piece of construction paper. This creates a beautiful and collaborative Earth Day message from the entire class!

A creative and fun way to get students writing in French.

I created this resources out of a need in my class to do quick and simple Earth Day activities that are easy, fun, and engaging and gets them thinking of ways that they can help the Earth.

Once I got started creating these cute little activities, I thought it might be fun for students to make their favourite little craft. They just love these ‘surprise’ crafts when they can open them up and see all the writing inside!

How we use this in class:

Students are encouraged to write about the ways they can protect the planet, how to recycle old materials, how reusing is a great way of upcycling something that you are giving a new purpose for and how that can help the earth to heal.

What is included in this resource?

I have included step-by-step instructions on how to put it all together for students to build their own concept of the craft.

Included are:

-4 x Colour versions of the world that may be cut and pasted with and without the googly eyes

-4 x Black and white versions of the Earth that may also be colour cut and pasted for students to build their craft.

-1 long writing portion to develop a good set of affirmations on how we will help the earth

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French writing skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These prompts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing writing proficiency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Have fun this Earth Day with this fun and hands-on Sorting Recycling Activity. This Earth day activity is perfect to teach your learners about recycling and its importance. Learners will sort the items into the different bins and learn about the different materials that can be recycled.

This printable contains:

---> 7 different recycling bins (small and large versions)

---> Items of different materials to be sorted into the different bins

---> Sorting Recycling Info Sheet

Instructions:

•Print out pages and laminate if desired.

•Cut apart the bins, and the items for recycling.

•Discuss with your learners about what items can be recycled and how they must be separated into different bins for recycling.

•Ask your learner to pick up a card, name it and if possible to mention what material the item is made of.

•Then ask them, under which bin they think the item should be placed.

•Continue this until all the items have been sorted.

•If your learner can read, you can give the sheet with the sorting information and ask them to see whether the items have been sorted correctly.

•To make this activity self-checking, put a small coloured dot behind, matching the bin colour.

Earth Day Letter Sound Fluency Strips

Use this low prep Earth Day activity to practice letter sound fluency in preschool, kindergarten or first grade. The cute thematic design will keep students engaged and interested while having fun and developing critical early literacy skills. Simply print, cut and laminate the 8 individual strips of letters and they are ready for use. Students point to each letter as they say the sound. A single strip can be repeated several times to build fluency. These can also be used to identify lower case letter names.

Suggested Uses:

♥ Pass out strips to students as a quick warm up before small group literacy instruction.

♥ Use the strips as a reading center activity. Students can work in pairs to check each other and trade strips for a second round. The seasonal strips are great to use on Earth Day and throughout the month of April.

♥ Use the strips one on one with students needing extra ELA support or intervention. Have them practice a single strip several times to build accuracy, speed and confidence.

♥ Use a metal ring to hold the set together and have them available in the classroom for fast finishers or extra practice throughout the day.

These Earth Day alphabet clip cards are the perfect way for preschoolers and kindergartners to practice letter recognition and matching capital and lowercase letters. Students can also practice building fine motor skills by using clips to mark each letter.

What is Included:

There are 4 clip cards for each letter of the alphabet. Activities include matching the capital letter to a matching capital letter, matching a lowercase letter to the matching lowercase letter and matching capital letters with the correct lowercase letters.

How to Use:

Students will take one clip card, look at the letter on the Earth card and then clip the letter that matches. The teach may choose to use small manipulatives, like mini erasers, bingo chips or counters to mark each correct response. The cards can also be laminated for students to use dry erase markers to mark correct answers.
