Why do you need this?

These worksheets help reinforce phonics skills by focusing on identifying and recognizing the final sound in words. This supports students in understanding the relationship between letters and sounds. By associating final sounds with corresponding letters, students strengthen their understanding of letter-sound relationships. This knowledge is fundamental for decoding and encoding words in reading and writing.

Engaging in activities where students analyze the final sound in words enhances their phonemic awareness—the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. This foundational skill is essential for reading and spelling.

How and when might you use this?

Students view images, say each word aloud, isolate the last sound they hear, and identify and color in the letter that matches. These worksheets can be used independently, in small groups, or whole class to allow struggling and advanced readers to practice this critical early reading skill. As students complete these final sound worksheets, they'll develop greater phonemic awareness that will transfer when encoding and decoding unfamiliar words.

Spring short vowel mini set - Included is one of each of the activities featuring short a.

Students will write and wipe or use manipulative letters. Students will build letters using flower petals, tap out sounds with Mr. Frog, and slowly talk with Mr. Turtle. This colorful worksheet helps your child learn their letters from A to Z with yummy foods and delicious dishes! Each letter has a big, dotted capital letter for tracing practice, a fun food illustration to color, and a lowercase letter with a food word for reading.

French Sound Mats – Les voyelles

These activity mats were designed with the K-3 teacher in mind. As you introduce new sounds to your Kindergarten/Grade One students, you can use the image pages for students to show sound recognition and phonemic awareness before they are able to identify letters/graphemes. As students grow in confidence, you can add the element of identifying CV sounds or VC sounds containing the target sound. Each mat has 6 cards that will contain the target sound. Students choose the card they think is the correct one, and attach the card to the mat with Velcro dots. The third and final level is identifying the target sound inside a word. Students will need to decode sounds to correctly determine the 6 matching cards that go on the mat. This resource will grow with your students as their abilities grow.

How to prepare this resource:

Make a copy of each page and laminate the page

Cut out the activity mat (the part on the left side of the page) and the activity cards (12 cards per mat)

Insert all the materials into a plastic bag, zipper pouch, or activity basket and you have a brand new independent work station for your Science of Reading lesson!

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. If you are finding that the audio isn't working for you or your students, please use the link in the READ ME FIRST file to add the files directly to your Google Drive! Most districts will not allow someone outside of your district to share files with students. Some districts DO NOT allow audio that originated out of the district. If the link is not working for you please email me at TeachingWithCoffeeAndMascara@gmail.com so that I can send you the direct files.

This is not a zip file but instead a file in Google. You will need to have a google account to open this file. Inside you will find all of the items in either a pdf format or a google slide. TeachShare does NOT allow me to use subfolders to organize the items for you, please read the READ ME FIRST file to help you know what all is included in your download.
