Kindergarten Reading Activities

5 worksheets, one for each vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). The worksheets contain a large letter showing the vowel sound and then lots of pictures, children need to circle the pictures that have the correct corresponding vowel sound in the middle of the word.

Why do you need this?

Understanding short vowel sounds is fundamental to strong literacy skills, it lays the foundation for their early literacy skills and paves the way for successful reading and spelling. The ability to recognize and differentiate between short vowel sounds helps children sound out words, enabling them to read new and unfamiliar words with accuracy.

How and when might you use this?

These five worksheets immerse students in focused short vowel recognition using visuals and interactive searching tasks. Isolating each sound, a, e, i, o and u, through pictures and circling deepens early literacy abilities.

This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level. This resource includes a total of 40 pictured initial /h/ CV and CVC words to use the h-insertion trick during speech therapy sessions.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

We use a picture of the day every morning during our morning meeting routine. The morning meeting slides are projected on our screen for all students to see. Students are asked to infer, visualize, synthesize, and create connections with the picture. Looking closely at a picture is an important reading skill for students to develop to create inferences about what they are reading. 

Additionally, The picture of the day can be used for writing prompts or centers. Students can look at the picture and write a story based on the picture. 

This is also an excellent resource to use with your remote learners. You could assign one or more morning meeting slides to their learning management system for morning meetings and writing or reading activities.

Students will write and wipe or use manipulative letters. Students will build letters using flower petals, tap out sounds with Mr. Frog, and slowly talk with Mr. Turtle. French Sound Mats – Les voyelles

These activity mats were designed with the K-3 teacher in mind. As you introduce new sounds to your Kindergarten/Grade One students, you can use the image pages for students to show sound recognition and phonemic awareness before they are able to identify letters/graphemes. Students choose the card they think is the correct one, and attach the card to the mat with Velcro dots. The third and final level is identifying the target sound inside a word. Students will need to decode sounds to correctly determine the 6 matching cards that go on the mat. This resource will grow with your students as their abilities grow.

How to prepare this resource:

Make a copy of each page and laminate the page

Cut out the activity mat (the part on the left side of the page) and the activity cards (12 cards per mat)

Insert all the materials into a plastic bag, zipper pouch, or activity basket and you have a brand new independent work station for your Science of Reading lesson!

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from Kindergarten to Grade Three will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

When to use this resource in the classroom:

After you have delivered your lesson on the Science of Reading and you have introduced and reviewed the target sound, you may want to show students how to use the resource in a group lesson.

Once students have the idea in mind and can identify the target sound cards, it’s time to make it a centre and let them explore the resource on their own!
