Book Club Activity for Any Book

By Colleen Burdette

Use for any book:

This activity is a collaborative way for students to work together in a book club and it works for any book. Students read the book at a rate decided by the club and respond daily to their reading.

Students use creativity to present the ideas going through the main character's mind during each section of the book. Students enthusiastically watch each groups poster fill up with thoughts.

Students also write questions over the sections they read. I used the questions my students wrote for future book clubs to answer rather than writing questions.

What's included:

  • Teacher instructions.
  • Student instructions.
  • Example of project.

How is this product useful:

  • Easy prep for teacher.
  • Engaging for students.
  • Students have ownership of their reading and comprehension.
  • Students use their creativity to present their information.

Paperless Picture of The Day Morning Meeting Work Digital Resources

By Professional Development and Teacher Prep

Do your students need highly engaging morning meeting digital resources or a picture of the day to start off their morning? Morning Meeting Picture Slides are important to utilize to develop strong relationships with students and peer-to-peer relationships.  The picture of the day allows for deeper conversations and the building of a strong classroom community, which in turn raises academic achievement skills. The digital resource has many diverse pictures where everyone can feel represented.

How I Use Picture of The Day

We use a picture of the day every morning during our morning meeting routine. The morning meeting slides are projected on our screen for all students to see. Students are asked to infer, visualize, synthesize, and create connections with the picture. Looking closely at a picture is an important reading skill for students to develop to create inferences about what they are reading.

Additionally, The picture of the day can be used for writing prompts or centers. Students can look at the picture and write a story based on the picture.

This is also an excellent resource to use with your remote learners. You could assign one or more morning meeting slides to their learning management system for morning meetings and writing or reading activities.

“Morning Meeting is an engaging way to start each day, build a strong sense of community, and set children up for success socially and academically.” -Responsive Classroom

“Morning meetings are an excellent way to help students transition from home to school and help them get ready to learn. In addition, these meetings can help you connect with your students, help students build relationships with each other, and promote an overall sense of community in the classroom.” -Centervention

The topics and what is included:

  • 180 pages of editable Google Slides.
  • Diverse, beautiful pictures.
  • Pictures were either taken by me or were purchased stock photos.
  • No worksheets.
  • An excellent time-saver where all of the pictures are ready to go in one place!

I use it with 6th graders to show how important carefully following directions can be. It could easily be used with younger grades or possibly older grades as well.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian Novel Study

By A Teachers Sidekick

This is a novel study of C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. In this product, there are completed lesson plans (and a blank one if you need to write your own), a slideshow that includes everything for each chapter (introduction, review of content, copy of the doodle notes, copy of the end of chapter activity/discussion outline, and the closure question), the Doodle Notes outline for each chapter, and the End of Chapter/Discussion activities. This novel study is for 4th-grade to 7th-grade students. **You will need to have read the first book The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,** before you do this novel study. I have a novel study for the first book also!****

Competed Lesson Plans

Each chapter comes with a completed lesson plan! The lesson plans include an I can statement (Chapter Goal), the materials needed, what students will be doing as a preview to the chapter, what they will be doing during the read, the activity after the chapter, some differentiation ideas, the assessment, and a closure. There is a spot for standards, but I did not include one because of different state standards. They are also all editable! It was made using Google Slides, so that will be the best place to edit the lesson plans.

Doodle Notes/End of Chapter & Discussion Activities

Each chapter comes with doodle notes and an End of Chapter/Discussion Activity. Doodle notes are notes students take that involve more drawing than writing. Students will have a prompt to help them know what to focus on while listening/reading the chapter and what to take notes on. The activities focus on multiple different skills, Central Idea, Supporting Details, Problem/Solution, Cause/Effect, Summaries, Story Elements, Inferences, and more. There are also 8 discussion activities where students will need to work in groups discussing a prompt about the chapter.

Slideshow

To go along with the book, there is a Slideshow that includes an outline for each chapter! It includes what is written in the lesson plans. So there are introduction slides for each chapter, a copy of the doodle notes and chapter activities, and a slide for the closure. The slides are also editable! So if you would like to add/adapt anything to fit your class/lesson better, just open the file in Canva or PowerPoint. I also made a Google Slides File also that is easier to edit on Google Slides, however you cannot edit as much. ***There is a slide, that you will need to edit. It is the “Discussion Expectations” slide. This is because each class will have different expectations for discussions.**

I hope you enjoy it! Please rate and review.
