Double Bubble Car Wash: Intro. to Problem Solving through Depth and Complexity

The beginning of the year problem-solving activity is designed to engage your students with mathematical reasoning and critical thinking.

Part1:

Open-ended problem with no correct answer as long as students are able to prove their solution with mathematical evidence.

Part II:

Four unique extensions of the original problem using depth and complexity icons.

Can be used with multiple grade levels depending on their multiplication readiness. Originally designed for gifted 5th-grade students.

Solution: While it is likely not possible for a single-lane, single-franchise car wash to produce millions of satisfied customers each year, multiple-lane, multiple-franchise car washes could certainly support their claim.

These math puzzles are great for students to practice multiplication, division, and finding patterns! This can act as a test review, an extra credit, or a finisher from when students finish their work early!

Each task card gives a number bank with 10 integers and 5 target answers your students must create. Using each number in the bank only one time each, students work in random teams of three to create all 5 expressions by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. It's more challenging than you might think!

This Adding Integers Discovery Lesson is great for having your students figure out the rule for adding a positive and negative number together through a series of strategically planned activities! A full lesson plan is included to help you implement this discovery lesson!

Students will start off completing a Do Now and then do a turn and talk about the Do Now with a partner. After that they will complete a Let's Explore section to figure out the connections between adding a positive and negative number and the answer they are getting. After that they will fill out a notices and wonders chart and then come up with a rule for how to add a positive and negative number! They will test the rule out to see if it actually works and check it on a desk number line!
