Real-Life Math fun Practicing Substitution, interesting Prime Number Discovery!

Algebraic substitution is not very exciting at best. Finding a formula that always generates prime numbers will make you world famous. This task card combines the two math skills into an exciting discovery exercise. Students get to explore the effectiveness of certain formulas in generating primes (while they are doing lots of substitution). Eventually they will see that this exercise is futile, but will hopefully have fun on the journey.

When should students use a calculator in mathematics? When fluency with mathematical procedures without the help of a calculator are well established, students should be able to use calculators with more complex mathematical problems, real-life applications and calculations involving very large and small numbers.

Math Calculator practice! Exponents and Roots task+Key for the TI-34 Multiview

Knowing every detail on your calculator and how it works, is the BEST feeling... as you do not have to interrupt your teacher a hundred times for help!
Independent work by students – no prep needed by teacher. Just print a copy of the tutorial and task for each student and watch them learn how to use their calculators well.
This Exponents and Roots task (with complete Key) gives students practice to become fluent using their calculator. The task concisely reviews the steps contained in the Exponents and Roots Tutorial. It should be used in conjunction with the Exponents and Roots Tutorial. The aim of both the Tutorial and the Task is to assist students to independently become 100% comfortable with their calculator. The aim of the task is DIY for students.
The task can be used as teacher assessment, peer assessment or self assessment at the end of a fractions and decimals unit of work.

This calculator tutorial and task series addresses the challenge of a classroom full of students who have a variety of different calculators. The series contains eight of the most popular calculators used in US Middle Schools.
