In this fun, real-life exercise, students learn about the growth of large pumpkins in the Washington County Fair Pumpkin Competition. Students will use and improve the following skills:
- Plotting points on the coordinate plane
- Finding the y-value when given the x-value and visa versa
- Finding the relationship (equation) between two variables.
- Real-life problem-solving
- Completing the data in a table from a given graph.
- Extrapolating from given data and making predictions.

Real-Life Math Fun activity! Learn Coordinates of Points on the Coordinate Plane

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!
The purpose of this exercise is to give students THREE exciting ways to learn how to correctly write down the coordinates of a point on the coordinate plane. Students get the following three opportunities to practice coordinates:
1. They have to write down coordinates correctly.
2. They have to plot coordinates of a friend correctly.
3. They have to check if their friend wrote down the coordinates of all points correctly.
The exercise is a fun, DIY printable task for students. The learning outcomes of the exercise involve x-coordinate, y-coordinate, The Coordinate Plane, quadrants, The Cartesian Plane, origin, plotting points, ordered pairs.

Slope (Gradient) is a very practical real-life experience for all of us - we climb stairs daily and walk up and down very steep and less steep inclines. In this practical, outside activity, students encounter slope first hand and then make sense of the mathematics behind it. Students are then encouraged to think about the real-life applications and implications that slope has in the life of people like the elderly and the handicapped.
Linear equations, slope, rise over run, gradient, y=mx+b.

This printable resource includes a task with complete key. The focus is to make the straight line equation and its graph practical and applicable to a real life event - working for an hourly wage and getting paid a set amount per shift. Students get to graph equations with the table method, build the equation of a real-life example, solve simultaneous equations graphically and through the values in a table, and make some real-life choices about employment with their knowledge.
