French Jour du Souvenir Pyramid Cards - Reading Task Cards

Improve reading fluency, build student confidence in decoding skills, set a path to self-guided learning, and engage students in fun Remembrance Day themed reading fun!

Pyramid Reading Fluency Cards Remembrance Day/Jour du Souvenir

These pyramid readers are a favourite of mine in the classroom! They are easy to print and insert into clear folder so students can be independent in minutes. These cards are great for making a quick learning centre, a great way to check reading fluency on the fly, or to do a deep dive with those that need the one-on-one attention.

What to do:

I make 4 copies of a few cards for centre activities, a few sets for a clear folder binder for ‘shoulder to shoulder, knee to knee partner reading, and a set of cards for a quick quiet reading session if we are getting too silly in class.

Once my students became independent with these reading cards, I made smaller versions and put them on a ring so students can quickly grab them when doing silent reading, editing their writing, or gathering ideas for a journal entry.

Science of Reading:

These cards coincide seamlessly with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Vocabulary included:

Le soldat place la couronne ronde.

Le coquelicot est rouge et noir.

Le garçon porte la couronne pour la classe.

La colombe est une signe de la paix.

How we use this in class:

I like to set up a variety of centres in my classroom once we are able to consolidate our learning. With concepts from the Science of Reading, we have looked at all the sounds present in the pyramid reading cards. I make copies of the cards and insert into plastic pocket pages that I keep in a binder. I place reading cards into the binder so they face both directions so students can sit across from each other. The students now know that they read each card that is in front of them, wait and listen while their partner reads, and then turn the page. Once they have read them all, they turn the binder and read all the alternate stories that their partner read. My students LOVE this activity and it builds their confidence for when they come to visit me at our small group table and we do our activities around these same sentences.

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These texts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Here's a freebie I put together! It can be used in any language class.

This resource gives you everything you need to teach Joshua 7 in French and to help students (native speakers or intermediate level) even as young as preschoolers to 1st to remember. The lesson focuses on the Achan and his covetousness and how it led to Israelites defeat. Students will learn about God's faithfulness to His promises.

Included:

• Full-sized 8.5x11 story pages with color. I laminate these and keep them in a binder. You can also print on both sides to save paper.
• Coloring pages - the story is in black and white for story pages or to save colored ink
• Storyboard in color
• Storyboard in black and white
• Story cards that can be used as review
• 3 Puzzles for different levels of learners! Great for retells. Can be used for oral or written retells.
• Sequence cut/paste activity.
• Word search activity using the most important words from the lesson.
• Flash cards for the memory verse, editable if you prefer a different version.
• Memory verse poster, editable if you prefer a different version.

1. How to prep:

I printed and laminated the story pages the evening before. I also printed the coloring page and the memory verse activity sheets the evening before.

2. I read the story pages. Students can color while I read to help them focus.

3. I showed the story cards (just smaller versions of the slides that students take home) to students and asked them to repeat as much of the story back to me as they can.

4. Students can put the puzzle together and retell again if there is time.

5. Students can also work on the word search or counting activity, depending on the age.

6. Sequencing activity - cut out the bottom half of the page and have the students cut out the picture boxes. Students can put the correct picture with the correct caption.

Why should I choose this resource?

1. The story comes from Scripture but is summarized for young learners. The Word of God is not compromised in the process.

2. There are a variety of coloring pages for students to do during the lesson to help them listen to the story but still busy with a non-linguistic activity so their brains do not have competition between the 2 activities.

3. There are plenty of activities to keep them engaged.

4. Easy to understand instructions for printing

5. Colorful and engaging pictures to help tell the story for pre-readers or early readers.

6. A chance to work with the story while practicing cutting, gluing, reading, and summarizing.

Do you teach a foreign language to your students? This packet contains two center activities that help teach colors in English, Spanish and French! It is differentiated so that students who need more help can use the colored word cards and those who are more advanced can use the black and white cards. The first center activity, the students match the color name to the color splat on the color mats. There are color mats available in English, Spanish and French with word cards available with each color. Use Velcro on the word cards and the blank spaces to allow the word cards to stay in place. The second center activity is a matching/memory game where students pair the colored splat card with the correct color word. This center is also available in English, Spanish and French. I happen to be in Ontario, Canada but these questions apply to any young learner. K-3 in the Immersion setting, Gr. 4-6 in Core French (and younger), and perfect for Homeschool students as well.

Daily routine language:

Students who are able to quickly master daily routine language feel confident to then try using less common words in class with teachers and peers. The secret to great communication is when students don’t even realize they are speaking to each other in French. This resource could set them on a path to natural, fluid speaking with confidence!

Once you have a grasp on all the simple sounds in French, the magic happens when you get students writing. They don't even notice that all the words used are from their very own memory banks and are all decodable words from past lessons.

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French writing skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These prompts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing writing proficiency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Use fortune tellers / cootie catchers to have students practice telling time in French using a 24 hour clock. Your students already love them, and fortune tellers are a perfect activity for reviewing this important skill at any time of the year.
