5th Grade French Activities

Flip Card decks are so handy for the classroom. I use them in small group work to assess and teach specific sounds, combinations of CV sounds, and to decode words together. The large format cards are great for my Grade 1 students as we can do a lot of whole class instruction and the students have so much fun coming up to the front of the class to come up with the 'really hard' CV combinations for their peers to read out loud.

Use the smaller sets for learning centres, individual work, and pair work as your students get familiar with their phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. My students happen to love 'testing' each other by flipping the cards, saying the sound, and then waiting as their 'students' write what they think is the correct letter on their whiteboards!

We love them so much as we can sneak in a little decoding and Science of Reading whenever we get a minute or two of time to fill.

Who can use this resource:

Any French educator who is wanting to practice, assess, and deepen their students understanding of sound work in French. This item is suitable for French Immersion, Core French, and French instruction at any level. Students in the Core French environment can benefit from using these sets independently for writing assignments and group activities. Immersion teachers will find these flip cards useful for any students from Grades 1 to 4 who need an extra boost to building a stronger phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. This coincides beautifully with the 'Heggerty type' approach to French Instruction being introduced in many provinces in Canada.

Do you teach a foreign language to your students? This packet contains two center activities that help teach colors in English, Spanish and French! It is differentiated so that students who need more help can use the colored word cards and those who are more advanced can use the black and white cards. The first center activity, the students match the color name to the color splat on the color mats. There are color mats available in English, Spanish and French with word cards available with each color. Use Velcro on the word cards and the blank spaces to allow the word cards to stay in place. The second center activity is a matching/memory game where students pair the colored splat card with the correct color word. This center is also available in English, Spanish and French. French Number Lines are not always easy to find to fit the tone and feeling of your classroom! I have developed this number line with simple font and easy to read numbers and words so that your students can get started on reading their numbers together. This bright coloured French Number Line will look great in your classroom whether you are just starting out or if you need a fresh new look part-way through the year!

What to expect:

-Numerical bubble with one number in each circle

-numbers 1 to 100 (with an extra bubble with '0' in it for use if you choose)*

*Please note the font I chose does not have an 'accent aigu' so you will have to add it in your own hand.

I have added this number line to my classroom and the students started organically using it whenever a number comes up in conversation. We have a clear gateway to practice from any number and we count forward and backward depending on the whim of the day. Students love to be the one to choose our number of the day and we get counting!

Telling time in French - Board Game

This French board game to practice telling time has a grid of 35 boxes. The first player to reach box 35 wins. There are lots of fun tricks along the way, so getting to the end isn’t always so easy! Check out the preview to see what the game board looks like.

In groups of two to four, players take turns rolling a die to move their piece forward. Spaces are numbered and players follow the arrows to keep track of which way they’re moving. There are some spaces with special instructions:

Départ - Start

Avance de 5 cases - Move forward 5 spaces

Recule de 5 cases - Move backward 5 spaces

Rejoue - Play again

Tu perds ton tour - Lose a turn

Fin - End

Use the time game cards so that students must answer after rolling in order to move forward. If students answer the question correctly, they can move forward. If not, it’s the next player’s turn. There is a total of 100 playing cards. 50 of them can be used when teaching the 12 hour clock. There are also 50 that use the 24 hour clock. You can mix them all up for a real challenge!  All of the cards feature digital clocks.

You may also choose to use these cards without the game board while having students work with partners, small groups or in centers to work their way through the cards speaking the time written on them.

Game includes:

• Game board (black and white and color copies included)
• 50 game cards - 12 hour clock (suns and moons represent AM and PM)
• 50 game cards - 24 hour clock

Not included:

• 1 die per group
• Game tokens, 1 per player
