Directions:

• Print and laminate multiple sets of the image cards.
• Divide the class into multiple groups.
• Group members take turns drawing a card from a pile.
• The person who drew a card must not show their team the image or use words to describe it. Ie if it is a rainbow you can only use shapes, lines, and location to describe the drawing and cannot say things like, "it forms after the rain."
• The group member describes and gives directions on how to draw the image.
• The team then tries to use listening skills to copy the drawing based on the directions given.
• Repeat until all cards have been used.

This resource should accompany The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Upper elementary, middle school, and high school students need reading fluency practice too, but we don't always think about it at these stages. This editable resource asks students to practice a passage directly from The Diary of Anne Frank and focus on accuracy, pace, expression, and punctuation. Students are asked to practice reading the passage to an adult. I have always had my students record themselves reading the passage at the end of a week, and I grade them using the same rubric that is on this assignment.

How to Play Bottle Flip

• Place students into random partners and give each set of partners a water bottle to flip
• Print discussion cards for each group
• Have students get out paper for scoring
• The oldest student flips first
• If they flip the bottle and it lands upright, the flipper gets 2 points, and then its their partners turn to flip
• If they flip the bottle and it does not land upright, they have to draw and answer a random question
• If the flipper answers the question, they get one point. If the student does not answer or says “I don’t know,” the OTHER student gets the point and they get to take their turn
• play for 10 minutes and switch partners!

The Board Game! Teach students how to recognize and respond to emotional situations. Included: 8x10 Game Board 60 Double-Sided Situation Cards Game Guidelines Game Pieces You will need a single dice to play. After teaching each emotion (sad, uneasy, surprised, angry, disgusted, and happy) play this game with your student or small group. Follow the game guidelines and enjoy playing this game with your students. Assembly: Print pages 7-16, double-sided, on cardstock. Laminate for extra durability. When cards speak of emotion words, they are referring to the words used on the posters in the first lesson “Teaching Emotions”. Refer to this if you are teaching the two lessons in conjunction with one another. If you are not, simply ask the student to provide synonyms for the emotions they are describing. Example: Emotion is sad. Emotion words could be blue, upset, fragile, unhappy, down, etc. There are two types of game pieces; flat and pop up. To create the flat pieces, cut on the dotted lines. To create the pop ups, cut on the dotted lines and fold on the solid lines. Feel free to substitute anything you would like for the game pieces. You could use coins, chips, the possibilities are endless, get creative! Game Rules: All players pick a game piece and begin in square #1: The first player rolls a single dice and moves the appropriate amount of spaces (1-6). If they land in a space that does not have a chameleon in it, the next person takes a turn. If they land on a space that has a chameleon on a flower vine, (example space #4, #7, #11, #15, #23, #26, #30, #34, #42), they pick a Situation Card from the pile. They read the situation out loud, and answer all of the questions (one to three questions per Situation Card). If they answer all questions correctly, they follow the worms to a higher space, closer to the food bowl (and the winners circle). If they answer incorrectly they stay put. If they land on a space that has a chameleon on a tree branch, (example space #9, #13, #20, #27, #31, #36, #45, #46) they automatically slide down to the lower level. They then pick a Situation Card, if they answer all parts correctly, they get another turn and roll the dice again. The game is over when someone reaches the winner’s circle. This is a perfect icebreaker and team building activity where students have the opportunity to get to know each other while practicing public speaking skills. Simply print the Google Doc and give hard copies to students, or share the Google Doc with students electronically.

Interview introductions are a great way to break the ice with a new group of students. This excersize has them finding out about each other and then introducing the person they interviewed to the entire class or to smaller groups. Directions

• Divide your class into pairs.

• Each person interviews the other. The information gained forms a brief introduction speech they'll present to the class OR to smaller groups.

• Establish a time limit for the interviews. 10 minutes works well. Keep track of the time and call change at the halfway point, 5 minutes, to ensure both people get an opportunity to be interviewed and to interview.

• When students present the introduction may begin like this: "This is Mary and she was named after her mother..." and the students will go through each answer by presenting it like a speech.

This find someone who back to school activity makes a great icebreaker the first day of school or first week of school, get to know you activity or brain break. Find someone who will help build classroom community while students practice speaking and listening skills. Students will walk around the room and try to find classmates that fit into various after summer break and back to school themed categories, such as "find someone who played video games over summer."

• 1 Find Someone Who worksheet with 16 boxes for students to fill in
• Editable version with clipart included

How to use:

• Students will walk around the room and find different classmates who fits the description in each box.
• Once they find a classmate who fits the description they will have them write their name in the box.
• Students will keep finding classmates until all 16 boxes are full.

Some examples included:

• Find someone who had a summer birthday.
• Find someone who has an older sibling.
• Find someone who is wearing your favorite color.
