Peak Novel Study - With Lesson Plans, Google Slides, and STEM Project

By A Teachers Sidekick

This is a novel study to go along with Roland Smith’s Novel Peak. This product includes completed lesson plans for each chapter, a Google Slide Show for each chapter, Doodle Notes for each chapter, an End of chapter activity for each chapter, and a final STEM project to go with the book. Students will practice making inferences, central idea, supporting details, writing summaries, cause and effect/Problem and solution text structures, research skills, and discussion skills.

A large part of this novel study is discussion-based. I have included a slide on the slideshow where you will put your classroom expectations for discussions. There are also times for the introduction to the chapter, you will start with a whole group discussion. (I would maybe recommend turn and talks if you use groups in your classroom)

The Lesson Plans and Google Slides are editable for you. You can edit them on Google Slides and/or Microsoft Powerpoint (I would recommend Google Slides because that is the app that it was created with). **The standards are not included in the lesson plans due to each state having their own standards**

I hope you enjoy it. Please rate and review!

Digital Character Shift Chart Google Slides Group Work Any Novel |Writing Center

By Perfectly Planned Designs

You just stumbled upon an amazing character analysis resource that can be used with any novel or even short story! Students will be asked to track and analyze how the main character grows and changes throughout the literary text. Using "post-it's" students will determine character traits and then find evidence from the Beginning, the Middle and the End of the novel. Students will then Elaborate that evidence in their own words to connect how the evidence they chose truly reflects the character trait!

The best part is that students can work in pairs or small groups! This is a game-changer when teaching virtually and I have found that students look forward to working on these types of projects. I change partners and have students complete it for each novel we read! I would give them several class periods to complete this project, and I tend to assign it as a culminating activity...which can even replace an assessment!

This Digital Character Shift Chart for Group Work with any Novel includes one colorful graphic organizer and 18 color-coordinated and formatted post-it's specifically designed to reinforce character analysis and reading comprehension Feel free to print and laminate or share virtually through Google Classroom, Seesaw or Canvas! Assign individually , but pairs work best! Since it's a Google Slide you can always duplicate the main slide to however many groups you have and have ALL the students in your class work SIMULTANEOUSLY on the same document as you supervise! Only one document to have to open and grade!

I always post the three posters below as references but a character trait list is essential.

Character Traits Anchor Chart Posters

Transitions Anchor Chart Posters

Elaboration Stems Anchor Chart Posters

Feel free to use the detailed instructions below to post to your virtual students!

✅ Each student will be assigned a partner.

✅ Think about how the main character of the novel has grown and changed from the beginning of the novel until now. You will track his/her growth by analyzing the character traits at the beginning, middle, and end of the novel.

✅ Each group is responsible for finding 3 character traits for the beginning, 3 for the middle and 3 for the end.

Under EVIDENCE, ➡️ State the character trait ➡️ Quote evidence from the chapter or chapters indicated.

Under ELABORATION ➡️ Elaborate that quote IN 2-3 SENTENCES.

How does that quote convey how the character displays the trait you chose? Use vocabulary words whenever possible.

✅ I have completed the first post-it set as a sample.
