Public Speaking Curriculum, Speech Activities, Debate Unit - Writing a Speech
By Write On with Jamie
*****************************************************************************************
Introducing how to write a speech when preparing for a presentation has never been easier! This lesson guides students through a step-by-step process of determining how to write their speech and what information should be included. When a middle school student begins a public speaking unit, it is quite often the first time he or she has been required to speak in public, other than the basic Show and Tell in elementary school.
Therefore, it is important to make sure the students become familiar with the basics of how to stand, speak, move, and make eye contact during any type of public speaking situation. This lesson is designed to help the students with all aspects of writing a speech.
The slide show, and worksheets allow students to practice and develop their public speaking skills. The worksheets reinforce guided note-taking techniques when used in conjunction with the slide show. The detailed lesson plans make implementing public speaking, speech and debate curriculum easy for teachers.
These no-prep lessons are adaptable for in-class instruction, distance learning, or independent student work. The PowerPoints can also be presented as whole class instruction or assigned for students to complete at home.
All materials are available in both Google Drive™ and print formats, ensuring easy access for all students.

After the group has resolved the dilemma, each character will have an opportunity to reflect on how their character feels about the outcome. Women in the Great Depression: Unit Resource * DBQ * Rdg Assig * PPT * US/APUSH
By Christa Nonnemaker
This Unit Resource Teaching Bundle contains the following resources:
* Women during the Great Depression: Primary Sources and DBQ's
* Women during the Great Depression: Reading Assignment and Worksheet
* Women during the Great Depression: Power Point Lesson
Topics in these resources including the following:
- Women and Work
- The Dustbowl and Women's Experiences
- Education
- Political Equality
- African-American Women
- Other Minority Women
- Celebrities and Famous Women
- Leisure Activities
The 22-page Primary Source and DBQ resource with 26 primary sources, 27 comprehension questions and 2 DBQ prompts gives students a chance to look in depth at women's experiences and contributions during the Great Depression. The first two pages include Background, Notes on Primary Sources and Teacher Notes.
Here’s a chance for students to read documents and look at images that shed light on issues facing women and facing the country during the Great Depression. These include photographs, newspaper articles, newspaper ads government documents and oral histories. During the 1930s, the country faced increasing differences between urban and rural settlements, an expansion of government involvement in people's lives due to the New Deal, as well as progress in some areas while continued problems with discrimination and segregation. It was a difficult time for many women, although some women saw some positive developments.
Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest. This can be completed in one or two class periods.
Each page of primary sources includes comprehension questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.
Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY (Historical Context, Audience, Purpose, Point of View and Why Significant). There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to the sources.
Two DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt.
An Answer Key to all the comprehension questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.
A bonus file is also included: How to Integrate Sources into DBQ's.
The 15-slide PowerPoint presentation covers the Great Depression from 1930 through 1939. It is an ideal lesson to augment a lesson about the Great Depression and the 1930s or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. The presentation includes descriptive text as well as primary sources. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month!
Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight how women experienced the decade differently depending on geographic location, whether they worked, racial background, and other factors such as legislation and cultural expectations.
This file has been secured via Flat Pack but if you'd also like the Power Point file, please email me at cnonnemaker@gmail.com.
Whether for standard classroom use, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, these are valuable digital tools.
Reading Assignment and Worksheet
The quick three-page Reading Assignment and two-page Worksheet provides an overview of the various experiences, activities, and contributions women during the Great Depression and the 1930s. It works well as a Guided Reading activity or as an exercise for Reading Comprehension.
It covers the time period 1930-1939. The economic problems of the Great Depression overshadowed much of the decade and caused an impact on women's lives in a multitude of ways. The topics include work, education, the Dust Bowl, political legislation, leisure activities and more.
Students can read this on their own in class, or as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more about women's contributions. A 2-page Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with a 2-page Answer Key.
Reading Assignment - 3 pages
Worksheet - 2 pages
Answer Key - 1 page
This is part of the Women in American History Series which includes Reading Assignments and Worksheets, Primary Sources/DBQs, Power Points and Activities from other eras.

Brian's Hunt Novel Study - With Included Lesson Plans, Activities, and Slides
By A Teachers Sidekick
This is a novel study of Gary Paulsen's Brian's Hunt ( a sequel to Hatchet). In this product, there are completed lesson plans (and a blank one if you need to write your own), a slideshow that includes everything for each chapter (introduction, review of content, copy of the doodle notes, copy of the end of chapter activity/discussion outline, and the closure question), the Doodle Notes outline for each chapter, and the End of Chapter/Discussion activities. This novel study is for 4th-grade to 7th-grade students.
Completed Lesson Plans
Each chapter comes with a completed lesson plan! The lesson plans include an I can statement (Chapter Goal), the materials needed, what students will be doing as a preview to the chapter, what they will be doing during the read, the activity after the chapter, some differentiation ideas, the assessment, and a closure. There is a spot for standards, but I did not include one because of different state standards. They are also all editable! It was made using Google Slides, so if you open the file in Google Slides or PowerPoint you can edit each lesson plan to fit your class’s needs!
Doodle Notes and End of Chapter/Discussion Activities
Each chapter comes with doodle notes and an End of Chapter/Discussion Activity. Doodle notes are notes students take that involve more drawing than writing. Students will have a prompt to help them know what to focus on while listening/reading the chapter and what to take notes on. The activities focus on multiple different skills, Central Idea, Supporting Details, Problem/Solution, Cause/Effect, Summaries, Story Elements, Inferences, and more. There are also some discussion activities where students will need to work in groups discussing a prompt about the chapter.
Slideshow
To go along with the book, there is a Slideshow that includes an outline for each chapter! It includes what is written in the lesson plans. So there are introduction slides for each chapter, a copy of the doodle notes and chapter activities, and a slide for the closure. The slides are also editable! So if you would like to add/adapt anything to fit your class/lesson better, just open the file in Google Slides or PowerPoint.** ***There is a slide, that you will need to edit. It is the “Discussion Expectations” slide. This is because each class will have different expectations for discussions.****
****You need to read Hatchet, Brian's Winter, and The River before Brian's Return. For some of the activities, students will be comparing/contrast or recalling prior knowledge from the previous books. I also have a novel study to go along with Hatchet, Brian's Winter, The River, and Brian's Return!**
I hope you enjoy it! Please rate and review it.

By Language Arts Excellence
This product features a highly-engaging introductory PowerPoint Presentation for the Father of Horror himself, Edgar Allan Poe. A unit of study on Poe is not complete without learning the gory and heartbreaking details of his life and what made him into the master poet and writer whom we continue to marvel at today. This 20-slide powerpoint runs through his tragic family life and childhood, relationships, early occupations (before he was the Poe that you know), synopses of some of his most famous works, death theories, and current pop culture references. It concludes with a 10 question quiz to see how well students listened... and trust me, they will be hanging on your every word! This powerpoint encourages class participation, is fully editable to suit your class' needs, and lasts about 30-40 minutes to run through.
